Roar smash Victory 5-0

Stepping out of Ange Postecoglou’s shadow was always going to be hard for the Brisbane Roar.
But they put their best foot forward with a record 5-0 second-round win over Postecoglou’s Melbourne Victory at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
There was no love lost ahead of the long-awaited clash between Postecoglou and the team that he guided to back-to-back A-League championships.
Especially after he’d taken exception to the Roar’s very public desire to send home their former mentor a loser.
And Brisbane danger man Thomas Broich’s claim that former assistant and now Roar coach Rado Vidosic was the “brains” of their past championships rather than Postecoglou didn’t go down well either.
However, even Postecoglou could not have argued with the result on Saturday night as the Victory suffered a 5-0 loss for the first time in the glamour club’s history as the Roar looked to make a point in front of 17,364 fans.
Brisbane brought the crowd to their feet when they opened the scoring when German maestro Broich capitalised on a clever Massimo Murdocca throw-in in the 22nd minute to find the back of the net.
And within a minute big Erik Paartalu made it 2-0 when his header sealed a Broich corner.
The Victory were on the back foot in the second half when Besart Berisha finished off an end of the field effort sparked by a clever clearing kick by Roar keeper Michael Theo in the 64th minute.
The crowd was brought to their feet in the 82nd minute when Mitch Nichols fed off Ivan Franjic.
And the Roar sealed the record win over the Victory when Albanian international Berisha found the back of the net in stoppage time.
The Victory were always going to be vulnerable on Saturday without the likes of key players Archie Thompson, Mark Milligan (Socceroos) and Marco Rojas (All Whites) due to international duty.
Especially after their 2-1 last round loss to arch rivals Heart.
But it seems nothing prepared Postecoglou’s side for the onslaught ahead at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Usual suspects were very good for Brisbane! Think Ben Halloran has added another dimension to them too

It was good of Thomas to clear the air with media comments during the week. As a Brisbane roar supporter, let us draw a line under the MV game, move on from Ange and bear him no ill will in his career. He was good for Brisbane and we have a capable replacement in Rado. Excellent performance by the team against MV.

We still love Ange. He brought entertaining football and trophies to The Roar. He should always get a good reception from the crowd at Brisbane. Will take some time for him to get Victory playing well as they are a fairly average group of players and he has to have a major clear out just as he did early at the Roar.

Yes it might take a lot longer than when he transformed Brisbane, can’t see much potential in this Victory team, even allowing for the fact the Roar were rampant. Can’t believe some of the Roar players aren’t getting a look in for the Socceroos… have to question Holger’s judgement about Milligan and Thompson being only A league players selected. Erik the Viking, Nichols, and possibly Matt Smith surely deserve a chance. They look super fit, technically sound and look good enough for international football. You could just about field the national team side consisting of current and ex Brisbane players: McKay, Zullo, Sarota, Oar, De Vere, Kruse, Oganovski.

I agree 100% although I do think Ange is being a bit precious. Perhaps its a deliberate strategy aimed more at the MV players to show he is not happy.
In any event he will always have the gratitude of me and I think most, if not all, Roar fans

Still early days and Ange will be given this season to start to put things right for MV…as he did with the Roar. However it is becoming clear after 2 games that some changes in personnel will be required. Victory had 3 first teamers missing on international duty yesterday and whilst the result may not have been different with them the scoreline surely would have.
The most disappointing aspect was the fundamental game skills ie tracking your player in defence, that players either forgot or couldn’t be bothered carrying out.
He flogged them on the training track last week so that clearly didn’t work. It is going to take the first half of the season before we see any sustained and consistent improvement in team performance. However it would be nice to pick up 3 points this Friday night vs AU and score a couple of goals…over to you boys.

If Brisbane weren’t smashing my team last night, that would have been thoroughly enjoyable.
Well done to Brisbane! Amazing.
And for Victory, well, we still have a way to go

Superb performance by the roar. I can’t help but think that if you swapped the goal keepers last night, Brisbane may have only scored 1 or 2.
No knock on the young fella but he just didn’t command his area that well and it looks like he needs to either spend a lot of time in the gym or take some angry pills before his next match.

Win or lose the Roar is still the most watchable team in the ALeague. That was a sheer joy to watch, an exhibition match, Melb just had no answer

Good heavens Victory! What’s going on at your club? All of a sudden 2 losses from 2 for SFC doesn’t look as bad anymore.
And how unpredictable is this season already? You might as well pull names out of a hat to determine the top 6.
