The Wallabies couldn't keep up with the All Blacks in their 27-19 loss on Saturday (AAP Image/Paul Miller).
The All Blacks invade Suncorp Stadium tonight as they take on the Wallabies in the final Bledisloe Cup match of 2012. Join us from 9.00pm AEDT for live scores and commentary.
The New Zealanders come into this game white hot while the Australians have been limping from punch-up to punch-up, their injured casualties piling up like regrets in a young man’s life.
With the big silver thing already back in New Zealand for another year, the Wallabies will only be seeking redemption while the Kiwis look to make a masterpiece of their domestic season.
Despite the citizenship of the Cup it’s never a dead rubber between these two great nations. The first Bledisloe Cup was played out in the midst of the Great Depression 1931, with the All Blacks winning 20-13. In an ominous twist, if you average out all the historical Bledisloe Cup results, the score becomes 20-14, again to the New Zealanders.
Despite their injuries the Wallabies surely increase their odds playing at Suncorp Stadium, where they’ve won 15 of their last 17 tests. Included in this string of victories was the epic 25-20 defeat of the New Zealanders last year which sealed the Tri Nations for the Wallabies. This was also the last time the All Blacks found themselves on the wrong side of winning.
Equally telling is the fact that Suncorp Stadium was the scene for the 2011 Super Rugby final which saw the Queensland Reds knock off the nomadic Crusaders.
There’s a certain kind of energy the fans put out in this corner of the world, and no doubt the Wallabies will need help as the All Blacks put everything on the line – every time they run out.
If the All Blacks do manage to notch their 18th win in a row, they will surpass the major rugby nation record of 17, a feat first achieved by the All Blacks in the 60s and Springboks in the late 90s.
And if they didn’t already have enough to play for, the passing of coach Steve Hanson’s father will no doubt bring an edge of emotion for the New Zealanders.
Hansen spent most of last week in New Zealand to be with his family, during which time assistant coach Ian Foster took the reins of the black chariot.
The team line-up looks pretty familiar for the All Blacks; as it has all year. Mealamu gets a start for his 100th test and the only other change to the starting team from Soweto is the promotion of prop Faumuina in place of the out-of-form Owen Franks.
Interestingly, Hosea Gear is rewarded for sticking with the New Zealand Rugby Union this year after being given another start ahead of Julian Savea. Piri Weepu sits on the bench again and would want to contribute if he has aspirations to wear the black jersey next season.
The Wallabies’ musical chairs continued this week after another two victims fell off the wagon during training. Ben Alexander and Saia Fainga’a are both out with wrist injuries.
Workcover may well be investigating the ARU; such is the rate of injury in the payroll.
James Slipper takes Ben Alexander’s chair while debutant James Hanson joins the 22. Digby Ioane is out with a knee injury however the return of Adam Ashley Cooper and Wycliff Palu is a massive boost for the home team.
Another interesting change is the return of Mr Breakable Drew Mitchell who will sit nervously on the bench, hoping to make it through unscathed.
No doubt the man will be covered head to toe in elastoplast; with his almost permanent run of severe injury and rehabilitation he’d have to be both the unluckiest player in modern footy, and also the most dedicated. It will be a great thing for rugby fans on both sides to see him out on the paddock.
Amoung the players to watch for tonight’s game will be centre Ben Tapuai; as a kid he took James O’Conner’s position in the Australian Schoolboys team.
Nathan Sharpe should have a massive game, being his last game in Australia; assuming he stays retired this time.
The highlight is likely to be Kurtley Beale’s face-off with Dan Carter. It’s been a while since Carter had a worthy opponent in the opposite corner, and Beale has the spark to match it with the best fly half the world has ever seen.
While there’s plenty for the All Blacks to play for, the Australians and their coaching staff are short-stacked and all-in. Expect them to throw the kitchen sink.

How come the Wallabies didn’t even get a warning for persistent infringements? The AB’s got one after 4 or so in the red zone, the Wallabies matched that in the second half.
Hooper’s card was for a professional foul – it shouldn’t reset the Wallabies infringement count.
That said, the Wallabies won the breakdown even when Hooper was off the pitch so it wouldn’t have mattered. Both teams seemed to conspire to let the other team win.

That’s actually not a bad post Justin.
He did not respond well to the pressure tonight although he wasn’t the only guilty party in that department.
What really struck me apart from the obvious issues around collision and offside was how poorly the All Blacks kicked tonight.
What has been a strength this season was turned into a glaring weakness due to inept execution and poor chasing.

The All Blacks save their worst performance of the year for this fixture.
Hope they use this game as motivation for their NH tour preparation.
While the Wallabies are to be congratulated the All Blacks were disorganised and lacked composure. Even the usual lift in the 2nd half was absent. Poor set piece and numerous handling errors saw them unable to take advantage of a weak final 7 or 8 minutes.
Joubert obviously has not been reading the Roar or has failed to take notice of the fact he is supposed to be on our side after that RWC final.
Deans has guaranteed his role through to the conclusion of the Lions tour barring an implosion in Europe.

One record streak has ended but another one is still on the cards. We have a 17 game undefeated streak in test and the record is 23 games from 1987 to 1990. 4 european tour wins and a couple of June tests should get us that record

Richie McCaw needs to add an appendix to his biography about the time he was completely thrown off his game by a Scott Higginbotham knee to the head and headbutt, because he didn’t manage Joubert too well in that game.

Following on from my comment in the other article OJ, will Higgers be hung out to dry by Kiwis like Quade, or do you think this is just one of those things that only Quade does and draws the ire of so many?

I think this draw is all my fault.
I was in two minds and couldn’t decide whether I wanted the Wallabies to win so that it will end the run for the AB’s who is sharing the 17 win record with us, or whether I wanted the All blacks to win to keep the OZ ranking down.
I guess fate decided to sit on the fence too.

Kind of a well deserved draw actually. The All Blacks didn’t deserve to win but neither did the Wallabies. Instead of 0-0, Graig Joubert can be congratulated with a splendid six penalties a piece. It’s a shame you can’t send the ref to the bin for 10 minutes.

Well a little bit of bile rises in my throat, which i choke back, not wanting a fully fledged power chunder to express forth…
Mate, the breakdown was poorly policed. Same with offside. This affected both teams and contributed to the game’s disjointed nature.
I think Woody was on his feet and contesting, not restraining the tackled man.
Higgs should have at least gone to the bin, if not been redded for his cowardice. You gotta chuckle though. OJ’s right; it threw Richie off his game.
TPN should have been yellow carded for deliberate obstruction. Yet the All Blacks were penalised for obstruction where a back-line set play was badly timed. It was a fair call but inconsistent.
None of this changes the fact that the All Blacks were rubbish and the Wallabies had their best performance of the season but some consistency would be nice.
I guess I wanted a flowing spectacle Justin.

Red Kev said | 12:01am | Report comment
Woodcock was carded for never releasing not being off his feet – Joubert clearly said this. As the warning was in effect it was a fair yellow.
TPN should have been a yellow.
I think Higginbotham’s love tap wasn’t noticed by the officials in real time, they can’t rule on the replay (until next season) but he’ll be sanctioned by the match review committee, probably 2 games if I had to guess.
12:14am
Riccardo said | 12:14am | Report comment
Fair enough Kev.
However, if Woody’s on his feet contesting the ball, perhaps he had released? That was my point.
In the first half the All Blacks were repeatedly warned and penalised, as you have pointed out. The Wallabies were equally guilty of similar infringements, particularly in the second half but were not penalised.
God that part of the game was a shambles and contributed greatly to its dysfunctional nature.
I don’t necessarily disagree with you mate. Just seeking consistent application.
12:21am
Red Kev said | 12:21am | Report comment
There is actually lovely clear footage of Woodcock’s infringement. Honestly he looked like a no.7 as tackle assist, he used his tackle grip to swing his body so he was on the right side of the ruck and over the ball really quickly, he just didn’t do the momentary release that McCaw and Pocock do so well; but as he’s a prop we can forgive him that.

Can’t wait to read the Sydney press try to talk up Beale after that performance. If Cooper put in a game like that they would mercilessly be calling for his head. How can you not at least attempt a drop goal in that situation. If he is not confident to take a drop kick from 30m out straight in front, he can’t be the Wallaby no. 10.

I’m proud of the Wallabies for taking it up to the All Blacks, but yikes that was close.
I’ll take it though, and it prevents the 17-game record from happening.
I guess Brisbane is the closest thing to a Wallabies fortress.
That game reminded me of the Wobblies losses from 2009-2010 when the Wallabies were in a position to win and nearly threw it away.
I mean yikes there was Hooper’s tackle (totally unnecessary), Phipps kicking on the full when we had front foot ball, and then AAC dropping that and Phipps giving away the penalty. Kurtley Beale dropping that ball and trying to pop-off passes.
I’m proud of the Wallabies though. They only looked like scoring a try once in the game. But they were up against a much better side. They’re inexperienced, and they competed with them.
Anybody expecting the Wallabies to play awesome rugby was kidding themselves. An inexperienced injury-riddled side took it up to a full strength side that looked infinitely better on paper.
I’m proud of the Wallabies, and hey Aussie bragged when they drew NZ in 1988, why not now?

Mate, the wallabies got to 16 phases and then nearly lost it two more times after that. Harris and Beale were ready to roll for the dropgoal. Where were the clear heads to get the ball to them ? With a slippery pill 20 plus phases I’d too risky. I’ll drop it eventually.

They had 4 phases then the knock on phase (from memory it might be only 3) where the ball was pretty much on the 20m line, any one of them would have done. That is only a 30-35m drop kick, even if it misses at least you have gone out attacking and not given the ABs the chance to take the game.

Mate, you need to face facts. The last two results confirm my suspicion that Genia and Cooper have been trying to run a Qld show at the Wallabies and that just does not work. Ask Timmy Horan – he recently wrote about this in the Courier Mail. Genia and Cooper cannot play the game on their own.
Deans had no leverage due to injuries and had to put up with this sh”t. This team with Beale at 10 looks like they listening to the coach and playing as a team, Genia and Cooper cannot play the game on their own. There’s no denying Cooper has talent but unfortunately his flaws outweigh his talent and the total package as it currently stands is insufficient to build a world cup winning side around without substantial improvement from Cooper.
So quit spinning this BS. Its Australia after all – not QLD! This QLD NSW BS is and has always held the sport of rugby back in OZ and as a long suffering fan I’m jack of it. Its time for some honest internal reflection and less finger pointing by all parties concerned.

Xiedazhou said | 8:42am | Report comment
Fact is that Deans made it extremely difficult for Genia and Cooper to run any sort of back line with his tactics (Genia to slow the ball at the breakdown etc), and his team selections. Farr Jones and Ella would have struggled to ignite McCabe and Horne…..especially given the forward platform that was laid on for them the few times Genia and Cooper played together this year for the Wallabies.

b) so what, Cruden has a 100 per cent record against the Ws before tonights game. Would any person in their right mind attribute those results just to Cruden? Its a team game!!
I’m a Cooper fan but I recognise some serious flaws at test level especially against the ABs and recent events demonstrate more serious issues with his attitude. He needs to grow up and take some responsibility. Mouthing off at the wrong time shows how much! Contrast his attitude to adversity with that of Beale.
Blinkers off mate. It’s about Team Wallabies and not Team Cooper. You are doing the guy a disservice with this wrong headed support.

Machiavelli said | 1:58am | Report comment
Rob,
I could have explained myself a bit better. I was referring to tonight’s game and the previous Wallaby win in Rosario. The team seems to be playing with more purpose and willingness. Contrast the players and execution of this third game with bledislo 1 and 2.
Cooper’s recent outburst confirms that a not so subtle battle had been going on internally on how the Wallabies should play the game – between a QLd QC centred game vs a more hard headed approach with an emphasis on defense and winning the battle up front before going wide.
It seems logical especially given the history of player power and the winning the Super Title in 2011 by the Reds that Reds’ players would be the protagonists. As Cooper and Genia are in key playmaking roles they would be leading this battle.
Of course this is all speculation on my part, but the results from an injury forced tyro team and a willing and committed number 10 in Beale tells me that perhaps the player group have not been following the coach’s instructions and advice. (Notwithstanding any issues with Dean’s delivery or communications or player skill levels)
In short, this constant promotion of Cooper as the saviour in clutch moments by blinkered Reds fans or any other fan for that matter is BS especially as we’ve already lost key games against the AB’s with him at 10.

Well, well, Joubert does not find a penalty and the AB’s clear. The W’s win the lineout and drive it up the middle. But a turnover to the AB’s and they go wide but TPN pulls off a huge hit and forces the knockon.

Sloppy lineout and the AB’s get a lucky break with a W’s knock on. odds of another scrum penalty?

The W’s kick off again, and go deep, the AB’s try to run it out, now Carter clears, no touch, Beale rolls a lovely kick into touch 15m out from the AB’s line.

Waiting nervously. Seriously hope the boys can do them and us proud and maybe knock the kiwi egos down a little in the process. Lots of injuries but who knows; maybe a fresh injection of keen young players will ultimately be good for us. Go Wallabies!

Crazy the schedule for this match:
9PM sydney, 11pm Auckland.
-Maybe they schedule this match at these times coz they think they will get more Argentina,Boks, And NHemphispere coutnries. Lot of ex-pats in UK. Who knows but it is a disgrace for NZ viewers no doubt and sydney viewers too.
AB’S by 10-15. Go the Honey badger .

I haven’t followed the build-up to this game too religiously, but I actually had a dream about it last night. The Wallabies started the game with the lamest kick-off in rugby history and the All Blacks got off to a great start with crisp passes and strong running lines. But then there was a mistake of some sort and the Wallabies scored a breakout try against the run of play. Joubert missed a knock on or forward pass and I was really angry. Unfortunately, I woke up shortly afterwards and missed the final score but perhaps a premonition there fellas.

Doubt the Wallabies are any chance. Injured and unfit players rushed into the team. Players out on the town the night before the game. AIGABs looking red hot. If its within 15 to 20 points I think thats a ‘moral’ victory for the Wobs.
