AFL could hit Crows hard over Tippett
Related coverage
Adelaide face a double AFL disaster over Kurt Tippett, with the Crows rapidly running out of time to strike a trade deal involving the key forward.
The Crows will probably lose him for nothing through the draft, but that is the least of Adelaide’s worries.
The Crows and Tippett are under a league investigation which now also includes allegations of salary cap cheating.
If AFL investigations officer Ken Wood finds there was wrong-doing when Adelaide re-signed Tippett in 2009, the ramifications are massive for the club, player and his management.
It is understood the league have confirmed to Adelaide that they can still present a trade option for Tippett, regardless of the investigation.
But it is also unclear whether the league would approve any trade.
The AFL trade period ends at 2pm on Friday, with the ongoing investigation giving rival clubs even more pause to negotiate with the Crows over Tippett.
There is no timeframe for Wood to complete his investigation.
The Tippett saga has mutated from a massive headache to a potentially devastating blow for the Crows.
There had been speculation for months about the key forward’s future once his contract with Adelaide expired at the end of this season.
Adelaide officials had repeatedly denied the existence of a special clause in Tippett’s contract, struck when he re-signed in 2009.
That contract made him the Crows’ highest-paid player.
But it has now emerged there was an arrangement, outside the contract, where the Crows would allegedly trade Tippett to a club of his choice for a second-round draft pick.
That arrangement is at the centre of the league’s investigation into draft tampering.
Now the league is apparently looking into whether the secret deal involved a salary cap breach as well.
There is little doubt the league will come down hard on Adelaide, especially if the Crows are found guilty of breaking strict salary cap rules.
Adelaide would most likely suffer a fine and the loss of draft picks and they have said they will accept the AFL’s verdict.
There is growing speculation about the future of chief executive Steven Trigg should the league decide to punish the Crows.
Tippett and his manager Peter Blucher could also be penalised for their parts in any rules breach.
Last week, Adelaide failed to reach a trade deal with Sydney involving Tippett.
Originally, the speculation was that if the Queensland-born player left the Crows, he would return to his home state and play for Brisbane or Gold Coast.
Sydney’s bold four-year bid for Tippett shocked the Crows.
On Friday, Adelaide went to the league about the secret deal because of concerns they had about their legality and this sparked the investigation.
Meanwhile, Collingwood struck a deal for Carlton free agent Jordan Russell and traded Tom Young to the Western Bulldogs.
Fremantle’s Greg Broughton will go to Gold Coast and David Rodan will leave Port Adelaide for Melbourne.
Lewis Stevenson also heads from West Coast to Port Adelaide, with all five players changing clubs in exchange for draft picks.

Surely everyone involved should be sanctioned in some way, including Tippett himself. You’d think people would have learnt by now that draft shenanigans usually end in tears. Or is there a whole lot of stuff that goes on that never sees the light of day?

Yeah, the impression I get is that this is perceived to be a deal between the Crows and Peter Blucher, TIppett’s manager, and that Tippett is somehow an innocent in this.
I just don’t buy this at all. Tippett’s career has been in Blucher’s hands for years, and he would have to be intimately involved in all these deals. And if there was anything he was concerned about, there was plenty of time to seek advice from a third party.
The deal as its been described made Tippett a virtual free agent in this year’s trade period, giving him a lot of scope to sell himself to the highest bidder. If the figures being bandied around in the media are to be believed, that’s been a very, very successful strategy.
In other words, an illegal deal has been on Tippett’s behalf, almost certainly with his consent, that has been leveraged to try to make Tippett the most overpaid footballer in the country. He has to be receive a significant punishment. A large fine and deregistration for several weeks of the AFL season (the same punishment Greg Williams received) would be sufficient.

The first thing Tippett should do is sack his lawyers. Their threat to the Crows to expose the off record dealings has exposed the whole shady affair. The lawyers greatly lacked foresight and understanding of the AFL’s draft rules. Using some sort of demand on the Crows based on illegal dealings is appalling advice and action for so called professionals.
At this point , Tippett is my least favourite player. His lack of loyalty to the Crows and money hungry grubby deals to be ‘entitled’ to trade elsewhere have left a bad stain on his character. Tippett was struggling for form late in the season and only fired during the Prelim agaisnt the Hawks (which i witnessed live), was this an audition knowing he would be shopping around for another club?
The Crows must be filthy and deservedly so.
Unfortunately, Tippett is probably the tip of the iceberg of these deals. The AFL should look again at Chris Judd.

Completely disagree. He doesn’t owe Adelaide any loyalty and he has every right to want to leave the Crows and join any other club for any reason he chooses. As for the deals, nobody forced Adelaide, whom I have no sympathy for whatsoever, to get involved in these deals. As far as I’m concerned, his character is fine.

That said, I don’t think anybody in the AFL should be engaging in these kinds of deals, however I don’t like that he is being presented by some as the bad guy.

Gee, if someone paid me an extra $200,000 I would want to know if it would bite me in the backside at some later date. The AFL will no doubt throw the book at all parties involved and rightly so. Tippett can go and play basketball or whatever as should get a holiday for a season or two. I would also suggest that all teams should tidy up the books as the Adelaide Football Club will not be the only club to be audited.

Latest update is the AFL have advised Tippett can not be traded today. Which would mean he can either re-sign with Adelaide or go into the draft.

It’s a delicate situation for the AFL, they push too hard and get the AFLPA offside then it could lead to a challenge under restraint of trade.
Tippett’s punishment will be under guidance from the AFLPA IMO.

If Tippett, his manager and the AFC have done what is deemed illegal the AFL will and should deal with it. The AFLPA know that.

I agree but I guarantee the AFL will heavily consult the AFLPA so that they are on the same page.

The AFL wasted no time in hauling the Eagles hierarchy to Melbourne over the Cousins affair and threatened them with ousting from the League – Similar rules should apply to the Crows.

Good point TW . I think the AFL greatly overreacted with the Eagle as have introduced the concept of ‘moral hazard’ where they become the jury on subjective matters. It will be fascinating how they react and they have left themselves open to the impression of differing rules for different clubs.

I’m with you there. IMO Cousins was treated horribly by the AFL.
