Phoenix tempers rise in Adelaide loss

Adelaide United’s double scorer Jeronimo Neumann has been branded a cheat by Wellington Phoenix captain Andrew Durante for diving in a bitter A-League fixture at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday.
Jeronimo scored twice as Adelaide hit three goals in the final 40 minutes to down the Phoenix 3-1.
But Wellington are fuming at the Argentine’s dive which led to Phoenix defender Ben Sigmund being sent off by referee Jared Gillett.
“He has dived, he’s a cheat in my book,” Wellington captain Andrew Durante told Fox Sports.
Wellington coach Ricki Herbert said he was unaware of his captain’s remarks.
But Herbert was riled at a goal by Wellington’s Jeremy Brockie being ruled offside in the 59th minute, while saying a goal by Adelaide’s Cassio some nine minutes later was offside.
“You have seen the video footage, write it yourself, I probably don’t need to put words in your mouth,” Herbert told reporters.
“At the end of the day we have got an opinion and sometimes we can’t voice it and I think that is to be respected.
“But all we ask for, is there an equal sort of line across the board?
“I think Jeremy’s goal was a great goal.
“I thought Cassio’s goal … that is offside.
“You make your own assessments on those.
“And let’s have a look at the review on the dive – if the boy hasn’t dived, then fine, we all move on, it happens from time to time.
“But if he has, then maybe there is a chance to make a bit of a statement here.”
Adelaide coach John Kosmina was surprised at Durante’s comment about Jeronimo.
“That is a bit unfortunate, not a nice to thing to say,” Kosmina said.
Referee Gillett was also the centre of grand final controversy last season when awarding a contentious extra time penalty to Brisbane’s Besart Berisha in the Roar’s 2-1 win.
But Kosmina suggested Gillett was in best position to judge whether Jeronimo dived.
“The referees make decisions that you agree with sometimes and they make decisions that you don’t,” he said.
“Looking at replay, it was a hard one to call.
“And he was in a better position than I was, and probably in a better position than the cameras, because he was right behind it.”
It was Wellington’s first defeat of the season while Adelaide joined Newcastle atop the table with their third win in four games.

Last player, contact was made(surely that isn’t in dispute- the contact) …watch the similar incident that had Boogaard marched in the ACL game v Bunyodkor…eerily similar. That’s football, Durante should be sanctioned for his disgraceful comments – bringing the game into disrepute etc.

Kasey, come on.
2nd goal was offside.
Contact, if you can call it that, was absolutely minimal, and it is very clear that the Adelaide player was simulating a good yard or two after the ‘contact’ was made. Or did he trip on a blade of grass? Maybe I missed it.
Point is, there was no doubt Wellington were hard done by last night.

Agree with you Roger, that was a dive all right.
That was very poor refereeing and no doubts the kiwis have the right to feel hard done by. Mistakes were made, lets move on. on the other hand, i think a commission should be able to review the incident and retroactively sanction the cheat, in this case Jeronimo.
Problem is, many still think “that’s football’. yes it is, but its shouldnt be. And now ppl are asking for Durante’s head for complaining. right.

Sanctioning Durante for being honest? No way, we should be looking to sanction the dishonest divers (ie. Jeronimo) rather than punishing players who played the game fairly.

Ok Kasey, let me get this straight…
A player dives, another player calls him out for it, and it’s the player speaking the truth who is “bringing the game into disrepute”? Give me a break.
You are clearly not a football fan. Look at the “contact” again and try doing so with both eyes open. It’s minimal. Jeronimo is not brought down and throws himself to the ground when he realises the goalie will get to the ball before him. It’s hard enough when officials appear to apply different standards to off side calls but when cheats prosper, the game loses.
Still, we Kiwis have had to get used to the way Aussies ensure they retain the upper hand in sports contests. Sydney’s Chris Payne is allowed to score goals with his hand against the Phoenix. I expect these officials to be rewarded for this performance and the way they managed to end the Nix’s unbeaten start to the season.

I was at the ground last night, have been out exercising all morning am yet to see the replay.
How many of you have made you minds up only with the luxury of seeing the replay?
How many replays does the ref get? My first instinct on seeing the incident last night was – “Oi Ref!”followed by “you’re in the sh*t son”..last man etc.
it was just a question of the ref deciding where the incident took place. ie penalty or free kick?

It’s not just about what the ref saw and what he decided.
It’s also about whether Jeronimo was brought down or took a dive. Durante simply said “if he dived he’s a cheat”. That’s a truism. But did he dive? I think he did but I have to admit I am biased. Have you seen a replay yet?
And if he dived, do you want to see that behaviour rewarded (ie. succeed in getting an opponant an undeserved red card) or punished with suspension/fine?
And do you really want the oppo captain sanctioned for speaking the truth as he saw it? That’s what I meant when I said you’re not a football fan – you’re an Adelaide fan.

Listen to what Durante said. At firrst he said: H’e dived, he’s a cheat, the he added the ‘IF’ in the second sentence. Durante is judge jury and executioner in his post game interview, depite Sigmund being the plodding defender that allowed his man to get goal; side and when he realised he wasn’t going to be able to catch up, he reached out and made a gamble that his professional foul wouldn’t get picked up. Jeronimo made sure by making sure the ref saw the effect of the contact that even Blind Freddy couldn’t miss the contact. Again, watch the Boogaard incident v Bunyodkor…AU held their tongues and just sucked it up and we’ve moved on. Time for this supposed professional fotballer to act like it and suck it up himself.

Ok Kasey. Have it your way. Be as blinkered as you like. We will not agree on this.
Jeronimo dived. That makes him a cheat. You are obviously comfortable with this. I am not. I think it is a blight on the game. I also don’t think the game needs fans who condone this BS when their own team do it. I absolutely guarantee you would be screaming like a stuck pig if the roles had been reversed.

What game were you watching Kasey… under nines down at the local park?
Durante was well within his rights to state his case… and if there’s to be any sanctions then they should be against the refs for being incompetent (why was Brockie’s goal disallowed and then Cassio’s was allowed?).
If Sigmund’s red card is not rescinded then the A-League is more of a joke than I thought.
Shame on you Jeronimo, I can’t wait until Adelaide visit the Caketin so you can explain your actions to the Yellow Fever in person…. you are a bloody disgrace to the League you cheating little mongrel.

You could take action against Geronimo for diving but it has nothing to do with the red card on Sigmund. Geronimo has a chance to make a goal scoring play andSigmund does enough to prevent him doing so. Tough luck siggy but if you don’t foul him then we aren’t having this conversation.

It’s hard to say, if jeronimo was allowed to put more pressure on the keeper, who knows what might have happened. Sigmund was obviously concerned enough to bother to foul him and the point is Sigmund has noone to blame but himself, the ref made his call and people need to respect that.

I agree with Titus, you could take action against Geronimo for diving & I think the FFA should, but this has nothing to do with the red card on Sigmund because he too cheated & tried to stop a possible goal scoring position.

There is no doubt Sigmond touched Jeronimo’s arm, but Jeronimo threw himself in the opposite direct to the contact, and two yards further on. It was a blatant dive and the guy is an out and out cheat and should have been booked for simulation. I hope Kossie rips shreds of him because it is not what we want to see.

Disgraceful performance by Geronimo and the ref’s assistants.
It is a hard decision for the ref to make on the dive. Mini-Seconds earlier sigmund did tug geronimo’s arm.
As Durante rightly said, Geronimo is a cheat and should be found guilty of diving. It is clear he shrugged sigmund’s tug, realised the ball was out of reach and a metre clear threw himself to the ground. In a pathetic manner too. His legs flew out from under him when he was a metre in the clear. We need to stamp on these cheats so refs are not put in these situations in future.
The offside goal was just awful – if you see the replay the linesman couldn’t have been in a better position.
I’m no Wellington supporter (I don’t think NZ should even have a team in the A League) but they were totally ripped by very very poor decisions last night.

b) Nothing happens to The Cheat

He made the most of minimal contact, that’s ‘gamesmanship’. How can the FFA punish Jeronimo without undermining the man in the middle who made the decision?
October 29th 2012 @ 5:08pm
TC said | October 29th 2012 @ 5:08pm | Report comment
The principle has to be that you can only really be done for diving post-match if there has been zero contact.
In the case of Jeronimo, there clearly was contact from Sigmund.
Yes, Jeronimo has made an absolute meal of it, and has obviously hit the deck when he knew the keeper was going to get to the ball first, but that does not excuse Sigmund’s clear violation.
Conclusion: we can all frown at Jeronimo’s theatrics, and rightly so, but he should NOT be penalised because of the clear contact from Sigmund.

Should have been Yellow Card for Holding against been Sigmund, DFK at the spot the hold ended to Adelaide. Followed by a Yellow Card for simulation to Jeronimo.
Paston was perfectly placed to collect first and Jeronimo never had possession, nor looked likely to gain it. Not DOGSO.
The hold was there, if briefly.
What followed though was deeply unpleasant.

Jeronimo was fouled…what comes after that, as there was no advantage, is irrelevant. Not a good look for him to fall over but the foul was already there. If it had happened to Archie Thompson in a vital WC qualifier l would have been calling for a red to the offender also.
The linesman made a mistake on the offside for the 2 nd goal but it was tight…
No doubt AU had the rub of the green but also no doubt will cop it at some stage later on in the season…just hope it’s against MV.

No doubt that the 2nd AU goal was offside & if I was the Wellington fan, I’d be more dirty on that then the send off. As MV Dave said, if that happened against Australia, I’d be screaming for the offender to be sent off, but even as a one eyes socceroos fan I could not have justified the 2nd AU goal if that was Australia.

As expected MRP decides contact was made, Jeronimo free to play, Sigmund’s RC stands(as it would have to be as Jeronimo is deemed to be free to play). Durante to be dealt with later:
