A-League football comes to ANZ Stadium for the first time this afternoon when Sydney FC host Perth Glory in what will be Alessandro Del Piero’s 800th game of professional football. We’ll have live scores from 5.00pm AEDT.
The Sky Blues eased the pressure on coach Ian Crook last weekend, scraping through the inaugural Sydney Derby with a 1-0 win thanks to a Del Piero goal after the Italian reacted first when his penalty was saved.
It was by no means pretty but in one of the tightest A-League seasons ever each and every point is crucial, and it keeps Sydney in touch.
With all due respect to Western Sydney, today’s opponent should be a more formidable challenge for the Sydneysiders.
Perth might have gone down 1-0 at Bluetongue Stadium a fortnight ago but apart from that they’ve hardly put a foot wrong, beating Brisbane and Melbourne Heart 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.
In Liam Miller and Jacob Burns they have perhaps the most solid midfield combination in the league, backed up by a central defence pairing of Bas van den Brink and Michael Thwaite.
It’s without doubt one of the best teams in the competition, and the return of Shane Smeltz in the coming weeks will only solidify that claim.
They should be too good today. Sure, Sydney got off the mark last weekend but they simply haven’t shown enough in their first three games to suggest they can seriously challenge for the title this season. A resolute effort might be enough to see them earn a draw here, but it’s hard to see them getting all three points from the Glory.

Well we threw that away like only the Glory can.The positive is that before Panta got sent off Glory played the best football i think i’ve ever seen them play in the A-League era, absolutely played Sydney off the park in the first half especially. The competition is too tight to throw away points like that when you are dominating a game.

It’s more encouraging than dropping a game against Wanderers at home whilst being outplayed buuut yeah, hard to get through a season flubbing all NSW games.

There were a lot of really, really good signs of Perth and we were really close on a couple occasions to pulling in an equalizer. Saw the foul count on my phone was running 13:2 and 2YC to 0 during the first half so I think we busted a lot of preconceptions there. Staggering self-destruction though. Going to take a little bit to properly cool off after this one. Like a week or so. But very fluid play, attacking, pace, short passing, some stretches of great one-touch play. Just need to lose these brain fades!
Want to see us come out of the blocks next week going for win number three and nothing short.

You know, I was actually out in the city for the first half. Things were great when I last checked. Then I get home turn on the TV and see 1:1 and that awful, godforsaken harbinger of a red square. God I hate that little red square
Did a very good Vader NOOOO impersonation in my living room. No shattering glasses and warping walls though.

Need to seriously improve our offence as well. Cannot believe we shot our feet off like that. I can’t think off a worse piece of self-sabotage.

You know, if you must have a bogey state, picking NSW was a bad idea.
Expecting to see Panta hanging from a show head as Fergie and co beat him like a piñata after that.
And you know despite all that there was only fingertips in the result.

Seething over that. Lot of good work thrown away by Panta and, ironically, Vuko.

Clear penalty for hand ball, more proof of the inept Australian referees

Well.
At least we know that Glory can play some really entertaining football after all. Not that it got us anywhere.
Magic of football is it – better team does not always when. Sour grapes in the bitter ashes of defeat, I’m sure, but that was a game thrown away by the better team.

Interesting choices in the sub, Fergie still wants this one.
But back to the card. JUST LET THEM SHOOT. It’s still on likely to be a 50-50 and Vukovic does well there. If you put your arm in the only thing you can do is get penalised! Even if by the grace of god you do not get sent off you give them a PK which is about a 95% goal. I know it is just a reflex but C’MON PANTA…
Now would be a great time for a Nick Ward cruise missile.
Sick of crap like this! Should not be in these straits!

Doubly frustrating when you consider all the Sudney fouls but only one, and a gentler one at that considering Lovrek running over top of a Glory player, actually matters in the overall scheme of things.
We still look better in general play which is encouraging.

Ghost of MVvSFC? Copped a red card, penalty then a careless goal then went on the assault to get 2 goals in last 20 minutes?

Just eat the goal if he’s gotten past you! We can score again just keep it to 11v11!
So frustrating!
