Jeronimo likely to cop A-League ban
Adelaide import Jeronimo Neumann may become only the third A-League player banned for diving while Wellington captain Andrew Durante could also be sanctioned for calling him a cheat.
Argentine midfielder Neumann continued his great form in his first A-League season with two goals in the Reds’ 3-1 win at Hindmarsh Stadium on Saturday but he was also at the centre of the highly controversial incident which resulted in Wellington defender Ben Sigmund being sent off.
Replays looked damning after Neumann tumbled in the box following a nudge on his leg from behind by last defender Sigmund and the incident is certain to be reviewed by the A-League’s match review committee on Monday.
Under the league’s rules on simulation introduced two seasons ago, players can be punished if a dive results in a red card or penalty and Neumann could be hit with the standard two-match ban.
That was the penalty served by former Central Coast Argentine import Patricio Perez and ex-Perth striker Michael Baird, who were banned for diving incidents in the 2010/11 season and remain the only players to have fallen victim to the policy.
The Phoenix have appealed Sigmund’s red card but it will automatically be rescinded if Neumann is found guilty.
A furious Durante didn’t hold back in comments made to a television interviewer on the field immediately after the match saying: “He has dived, he’s a cheat.”
He then qualified his comment by saying: In my book, if he’s dived he’s a cheat.”
Football Federation Australia said the Phoenix were likely to be issued with a please explain over his comments in the coming days.
The experienced defender could be punished for breaching the A-League player code of conduct. However it’s likely he would only receive a fine or suspended fine and not a ban.
After a match featuring several controversial offside calls, Wellington coach Ricki Herbert hinted he wanted to see Neumann punished, if indeed he was found to have taken a dive.
“Maybe there is a chance to make a bit of a statement here,” Herbert said.
The controversy overshadowed the Reds’ third win from four matches and the fine form of Neumann as imports continue to light up the early rounds of the competition.
Neumann has three goals in four games while Wellington’s Belgian import Stein Huysegems also netted his third goal of the season in the match.
English veteran Emile Heskey is top of the international bunch, though, with a double in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory on Friday giving him four goals from as many matches.
Alessandro Del Piero also scored for a third successive game, converting a penalty in Sydney FC’s come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Perth Glory at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.
There was more refereeing controversy in that match, with Glory coach Ian Ferguson furious a penalty was not given when Rhyan Grant appeared to hand-ball inside the box.
Adelaide and the Jets lead the early running on nine points while Central Coast are two behind after bouncing back with a 1-0 away win over Melbourne Heart on Sunday.
Sydney and Perth are next while Western Sydney moved off the bottom of the ladder with their first ever win, a shock 1-0 upset away to reigning champions Brisbane Roar on Saturday night.

If Jeronimo gets banned it is complete BS and would be yet another example of the FFA screwing over AUFC( No alcohol sponsorship only affected 1club; Optus getting snippy about a website only affected one club – shutting down a well used direct line of communication between the fans and the club….With every passing year the actions of the FFA make it look more and more like the Football Federation of Eastern Australia.
contact was made, exaggerating isn’t diving.
I look forward to Jeronimo scoring again and celebrating Suarez-style in the near future.

very much a male.
Re: eyesight issue: I’m probably suffering from monocular vision;) . Its rare for me to have questionable ref decisions go in favour of the team I follow..Of course being a Reds fan I do seem to recall being screwed over by the refs in a Grand Final or 2.
Nobody likes a sook, we were told to build a bridge and get over it; I suggest the Wellnix fans do the same.

Was O/S for the 6-0…thankfully still haven’t watched the game. But how did you view the Red dished out by Mathew ‘F**king’ Breeze to Cristiano in the 08-09 Granny? Contentious to say the least surely. My Reds played almost the entire game a man down.
e.g:
Former Australia international Robbie Slater has called for a top-notch overseas referee to control he A-League grand final after yet another controversial decision “ruined” the decider at Telstra Dome on Saturday night. [1]

What will likely happen – path of least resistance for the confrontation-averse FFA:
Durante fined
Sigmund Red Card over-turned
Jeronimo slapped on the wrist with a feather (reprimand, warning or no action).

Diveonimo cheated and he will be punished. Good luck defending him in the return match or in Sydney where we will be letting him know exactly what we think of him.
Its a shame because he is a great talent… But he surely he would have been told.. “That’s no good here”… . He is risking the support of our game where the other codes supporters can rightly say its the “diving actors oscars” game which we have worked so hard to ditch…. Well done Diveonimo for reminding everyone that this happens in our game.
Nix forever….
Snipers never.

Yes its all Jeronimo’s fault that bogans think football is full of divers and cheats… surely they’ve all forgotten by now the furore over the controversial penalty to Besart Berisha that won the most recent Championship. Diveonimo? Really, are you 12 years old?
Do yourself a favour, google Luis Suarez. Now there’s a serial diving cheater. and considering the publicity the EPL gets compared to the HAL even in this country, surely a more worthy direction for your ” clean up the game” campaign to begin.
Wow this is way over the top now.
Every team play professionally , if they can draw a foul by running across a defender or making contact more obvious they will, i have no problem with this.
Do we have any Luis Suarez’s in the HAL? No! Case closed. build a bridge and get over it

whats with the ‘and in sydney we’ll let him know’?
‘and if they come to australia let them know what they think of diving?’
a number of leagues don’t want blatant diving but does australia have to maintain this stuff about we are tougher and more masculine physical crap all the time.
sure – jeronimo may get booked for it. i’m not on the match review committiee or an adelaide supporter, but if there was shirt pulling does that count as cheating also? is durante upset about defenders pulling shirts or physical players elbowiing people in the head? or is it only when your team loses that its cheating?
unfortunately this will be talked about for a while now. and its not jeronimo that has caused any stir, the general media will use it as an excuse to have another bash at the a-league.
get over it. adelaide still won 3-1. the ‘dive/fall’/red card incident didn’t win them the game.

He cheated and he will be punished. And he is a player with great skill… But we dont want divers in our game… And thats why there are rules to stamp it out. Stop drawing comparisons to EPL…where they have already the crowds and members to keep their game afloat…
..it’s not my direction… It’s that of most in the Aussie game that say this is the single most difficult issue in convincing the public ..where we believe in a fair go… The old “the referees there to be influenced” is a crock of shit. You can go do that when the a.l. falls over and returns to a semi pro game in the country
We are talking about the a.l. where if you consider the bigger picture for once, we are trying to win over the hearts and minds (and wallets) of the Australian and NZ public.
And to claim they are bogan sports is laughable… I’ve seen plenty from all codes and especially from Adelaide also….(Jentner that’s for u if ur watching)…
Suarez isn’t playing in a.l.. Nor is he playing in Argentina. They can have their own style of play… And obv Suarez upsets you… So obv you can understand why we think Diveonimo acted like a little grub he will serve out a punishment to stamp it out of our game …. Surely you don’t want diving? Do you?
When it affects your team… ? No sour grapes.. I have no problem with adelaide winning the game… We have never beaten you there…. It’s a tough ask….
Simple fact . It’s cheating… We don’t want it… And I’ll be the first to slam our players if they did the same.

Kasey, do you think import players need to be told diving or simulation is frowned upon in Australia more so than it would be in other countries?
It not only acts a fodder for the megaphones of the AFL, but our own fans don’t respect players who do it.
I remember a game where Bobby Petta went down easily and the Hindmarsh crowd gave him both barrels.

I think a joining briefing from the playing group could help. Just to be clear though….I don’t really consider it ‘diving’ when a player makes the most of an opposition player fouling him. That’s just part of the game and helps the poor HAL refs pick up things they often miss. What I find really annoying and more difficult to forgive is faking injury, especially from a dive. That’s just childish and stupid.

Anybody mentioned the exceptional ratings figures from the most recent round?
3 of 5 games getting over 100k viewers. Out-rating even the Merseyside derby (which was on at a very reasonable hour I might add).

Has anyone got the footage as I didn’t see the game and I don’t feel entitled to comment authoritavely until I have seed the dive. What i will say is that the player should only be suspended if the replay shows indisputably, and it has to be indisputable, ie you see clear air between the opposing players boots or something damming like that before he is suspended. I remember Perez at Central Coast being suspended and while he may have dived, the replay did not prove conclusively that he did so in my opinion the suspension he recieved was rubbish. And I say this as a Brisbane ROar supporter who has no love for the Mariners.
