The 2012 Melbourne Cup has been won by Green Moon, who beat Fiorente, and Jakkalberry, in third in a surprise result for all three placings.

Kelinni finished fourth.

Ethiopia has run last – it is believed to have injured a tendon, but it appears the horse will survive.

Green Moon was given the run of the race by jockey Brett Prebble, for owner Lloyd Williams and trainer Robert Hickmott. He was an outsider at $20 to win the race.

Fiorente, with jockey: James McDonald and trainer: Gai Waterhouse, paid $11.80 for second.

Jakkalberry in third, ridden by Irish jockey Colm O’Donoghue and Italian trainer Marco Botti, paid $16.
