Piggins’ fears realised in Crowe exit

George Piggins says his worst fears about private ownership of South Sydney could be realised with Russell Crowe reportedly keen to sell his share of the NRL club.
The Nine Network reported on Sunday that Crowe wanted out of the club at the end of the 2013 season after a difficult year both professionally and personally.
Piggins was a fierce opponent of Crowe’s and businessman Peter Holmes a Court’s successful takeover bid in 2006 and has been an outspoken critic ever since.
The former club patriarch said he was not surprised at the uncertain predicament Souths now found themselves in.
“Before the vote I went and visited Russell and he said if he won the vote it was his club to do whatever he wanted to do with and that has proven to be the case,” Piggins told AAP on Sunday.
“I think the fans must be very concerned about where the club goes now, and those who voted for the takeover must be very concerned too.
“This is exactly what worried me most about the whole thing … the fans will be feeling cheated.”
Amid much fanfare Crowe and Holmes a Court gained ownership of the struggling club after 75 per cent of Leagues Club members voted in favour of their $3 million takeover bid.
South Sydney have called a press conference for Monday morning when club officials are expected to address the issue.
But where exactly Souths go from here if Crowe wants out is the big question.
Crowe and Holmes a Court have publicly fallen out since buying into the club and Holmes a Court, who once enjoyed a very hands-on role, is far removed from the day-to-day goings on at Redfern.
It is unknown if Holmes a Court would continue as an owner or follow Crowe out, with the club forced to begin a search for a new owner.
Given the struggles of the Rabbitohs’ leagues club and the unwillingness of the cash-rich South Juniors to give money to the senior football club, the continuity of a private ownership model seems the most likely possibility.
But just who would be interested in the club, which has drained millions from Crowe and Holmes a Court, is a big question despite the club’s resurgent on-field success.
Piggins resisted the opportunity to claim `I told you so’, instead wondering what was the next step for the famous club.
“There’s no fun in being right,” he said.
“You have to ask where do Souths go from here?
“Where will the money come from considering the struggles leagues clubs are having these days? Will the club still be based in Sydney or might they have to move it somewhere like Perth?
“This brings so much uncertainty, and it was always what troubled me about it.
“But I can’t see anyway they can go back to the old model. They will have to find another billionaire who wants to take over and I’m not sure there are too many of them out there.”
A member of Souths’ last premiership-winning side in 1971, Piggins hasn’t attended a Rabbitohs game since the takeover.
He wouldn’t be drawn on whether any possible exit of Crowe and Holmes a Court would open the door for his return to Redfern, insisting that at 70-years-old he would leave the running of the club to others and would continue to watch matches on television.

Well, well, well, it only took 6 years. The big time actor has had enough of his TOY and wants out. The asset stripping has finished, all ten apartments at Redfern have been sold, The leagues Club building has been sold, the Leagues Club is a basket case and HE wants out.
Now the supporters are worried and well they should be, this team could well end up in Perth or worse still New Guinea.
Those same supporters should just remember how they treated George Piggins and his family to replace him with Crowe. George never received any payment for his many years as an administrator, Crowe has charged 9% interest on money he has loaned the club, just look at the financials.
What a mess and what a terrible way for the players and coach to start a new year, full of uncertainty.

Piggins whinging about Crowe again – what a surprise. First he complained when the members voted for Crowe to buy in and SAVE THE CLUB. Now he’s whining about Crowe leaving. Can’t have it both ways George.
I’d love to hear a positive, sensible suggestion from Piggins as to how he would do things. Apart from running the club into the ground that is. But of course that won’t happen.

I’m not seeking to demean Crowe’s efforts with Souths in recent years and certainly he has raised them to a top tier status, but I seem to remember that it was Piggins energy and resolve that saved Souths from extinction after the Super league War had decimated so many of the Sydney clubs. There would not have been a club for Crowe to pour his money into, but for Piggins resolve. Had Norths had a Piggins they also may have survived.
Piggins had fears about privitisation many years ago and before Crowe and Court took over. His option would have been a financially poorer one but one which aimed at re-establishing a foundation upon which the club could survive long term. That option now seems to have disappeared and rightly Piggins is expressing concern that every Souths fan should be feeling. No disrespect to Crowe who tried very hard to make the club a formidable force again, but its built entirely on his money. It was a relationship that was never going to survive indefinitely. Crowe doesnt have infinite pockets and his family, as I understand it, are not happy with what they see as an eroding of his wealth.
If a buyer cant be found for Souths, it is very likely, given the club itself is virtually broke and barely functioning, that the local community will lose this proud foundation club to somewhere like Perth. I’m not a Souths fan but I would feel sad about losing that great club.

All Piggins did was to appeal to the “we wuz robbed” mob mentality. He did nothing about reorganising the manner in which the football club was run. As such Souths were in very real danger of going bankrupt at the point that Crowe and Holmes a Court stepped in.
Now maybe all their money and efforts will be in vain, but at least they had a go at trying something different. Piggins had no idea about how to face the future. Great (albeit dirty) player of his time, but absolutely unsuited to running a football club in the modern era.

He won the unwinnable battle. He defeated News Ltd. And he fought that battle over months of intense public relations attacks. He showed a courage of conviction (and might I add put a lot of his money in as well) to ensure Souths survived. And he did it despite poor ongoing health To down play Piggins role is to not understand the battles that were fought. I said that I am not a Souths supporter. But I am a good friend of one of the major behind the scenes operators in that battle and a close personal friend of George. You obviously only know what you were fed by the media.

South Sydney simply do not have enough paying fans to be viable going forward. They should look at relocation, Sydney’s NRL market is choc-a-block. They could do a service and relocate to Brisbane, Gosford, Rockhampton or Perth.
Having said this, the likes of Easts and Cronulla should be looked at as well.

Souths have a huge support base with all the housing estates around Waterloo who wouldn’t support them in Perth – and once they start winning more fans will turn up. Easts have a very successful leagues club and plenty of money, even if league isn’t followed much in the east. Cronulla have a huge junior base and are going to get a lot from the redevelopment. So none of those teams are going to relocate anytime soon.

Souths support base is strong in Sydney’s west and anywhere South of the housing estates around Waterloo all teh way down to La Perouse/There are decent numbers in the Shire..The housing estate support is a fraction of their total support in Sydney. Many younger ones have moved West ,due to the cost of inner city living.
One of the very reasons Souths moved their home matches to ANZ ,was due to the numbers of their fans living in the west.
Um!! Souths have been winning Clipper, they made the semis this year.
I do agree, none of their fans will support a move to WA and it is plain scaremongering by Piggins.
Even Rothfield (who has the odd rational story) noted today.the club is on strong foundations and with the grant from the ARLC, exceeding the salary cap by $2m,all clubs will be on a strong financial footing.

Clipper, do you honestly believe that Souths support is confined to Redfern and Waterloo? Do you even live in Sydney or if you do you ever actually go anywhere? Souths official territory extends southward from Randwick to La Perouse which includes some of Sydneys more expensive areas and is its official junior area and includes Newtown marrickville and Stanmore these days also. And all those Rabbits you might notice on cars all over Sydney I wonder how you explain them? Souths I believe have over 20,000 members all over Sydney and Australia.
Really you should stop peddling this mythology you have in your head about League fans all being down and out housies. It dead set makes you look like an absolute idiot clipper. Oh that’s right…. Really constantly professing such stupid thoughts also doesn’t exactly back up the other big idea you have in your head that AFL and Rugger supporters are someway intellectually superior. I mean your compatriot in intellectual superiority Mr Whitchurch is a bunnies man I believe. But keep up the good work Clipper and maybe take a drive down Anzac Parade sometime.

This is were the rabbit name came from, when they were selling them on the streets in the depression, their traditional support base.

And the core area of Waterloo which we have been trying to get through to you Clip,is only a small fraction of the club’s membership and fan base.Else the club would be playing their games in toto at the SFS.
You continue to ignore the fact, and bring it up for whatever reason. But it is plainly incorrect.
We know the story about the guy flogging rabbits during the depression years, but the area has changed remarkably since .Yes there are fans living there, but they are only a slice of the Souths fanbase cake.
I see so many cars ,with the rabbits motif on the rear window of their cars in the Shire,I am waiting for R Crowe to suddenly pop out of a local shop.
It is not up to the people of Waterloo, but the total membership to put it to the vote. You suggesting members such as Denton,Greiner,Keneally,Ray Martin (Waterloo residents LOL) are going to give their affirmation to such a move?

Piggins having a whine, when in fact the club under Crowe etc, have put the club in a strong position, playerwise ,sponsorswise and indeed as a team with decent market value, for any prospective purchaser.
This was not the case beforehand. The smell of an oil rag mentality that existed, existing week to week in this day and age is outmoded.
I respect Piggins for his Herculean efforts to get the Rabbits reinstated,I conversely find his constant snipes at the current situation
sour grapes.
The new ARLC grants which cover the salary cap and extra for narketing and management, have made clubs even less dependent on their league’s'clubs for support.
The notion the Sharks should be looked at, with the 3rd largest junior base in Sydney, not needing the large sums from their League’s club,a $300m development to provide further funding to the Licensed club, and the grant from the ARLC to cover the football club costs,is laughable at least. The Sharks are not privately owned ,for further edification.
Talk about firing from the hip, with blanks.

At least George didn’t hire thugs to follow members and their families and search their garbage bins and threaten them. No, that was Crowe and Holmes a Court. When you speak arrogance and vindictiveness, they take all the awards. The club was a lot healthier financially when George left the football club in 2003 than it is now. The club’s annual reports prove that. Open your eyes Crowe Huggers.

In Piggins we are seeing the “bitter old man” coming out, I’m not even a Rabbits supporter but if I was I would struggle to find what Crowe has done wrong in his tenure. I have seen many a man quit administration, coaching and just plain 9-5 jobs to try and salvage marriages, families and relationships at least he’s being upfront. I’m sure even if he sells his share he will continually financially support the club in some capacity.
Go the broncos!

If Souths have to relocate – and now we finally have a chance to get a Sydney club out of Sydney at least part of the time so the ARLC should be snooping around WA mines to make it happen – it won’t be Russel’s fault. Piggens was just the squeaky wheel that made the noise, but Crowe and Robert Holmes are the ones who had a plan and implemented it.

The sad truth, is that Piggins and Rusty were both right.
Before Russ came along, the club was doomed. People can march in the street all they want, but without money (i.e. tens of thousands of paying members & a secure gate revenue structure), the club would have folded again. Russ saved it – no question about it.
That said, he now leaves and the Bunnies are shrouded in uncertainty – exactly what Piggins feared. Crowds and members have both been promising but much more is needed for this great club. Hopefully, there’s another interested and loyal purchaser nearby.

If you has viewed today’s press conference,I did not detect uncertainty by any means AR.The crowded in uncerainty notion is media guff, and they were told so in no uncertain terms.
The club made profits over the last couple of years, and a 7 figure one predicted for 2013.
The members have the final say, that is how the deal was legally set up.
The duo have not had to chip in since 2008,because of that very fact.
Clubs in quite a few codes, would like to be in the financial position ,Souths have produced.

CC, I’m not trying to nitpick but this isn’t exactly true:
“The club made profits over the last couple of years, and a 7 figure one predicted for 2013.”
It’s been widely reported that this “profit” was calculated before tax, depreciation, intrerest etc had been taken out.
The club’s last annual report showed that the club recorded an $864,225 loss in 2011, amassed $10.6 million in liabilities against $4.6 million in assets.
Crowe and Holmes a Court also made a loan to the club with a deadline of 30 Sep 2012, which the club failed to meet this year. It’s been extendde to 2015 on a 9% interest rate. It’s a great club but it’s hardly awash with cash.
