Richard Dwyer is an American boxing pundit who advises people which way to gamble in boxing. He, along with others in the boxing community, are wondering why Sonny Bill Williams has been listed as the favourite in his upcoming bout with Francois Botha.
Dwyer feels the SBW v Botha fight should be a totally “one sided affair” and that Botha should be a “5 to 1” favourite. His explanation on why SBW is the favourite is because the betting line “reflects Sonny Bill William’s celebrity more than his ability”.
In his report on how to bet for the fight he gives his opinion on Botha and SBW and why Botha should win. His opinion on SBW’s boxing is interesting. While he does not belittle or disrespect SBW, he doesn’t seem very impressed with what he’s seen so far.
His advice is to hedge your bet on Botha winning with a SBW knockout victory. And the SBW victory part of the bet “isn’t because I believe that much in WIlliams, it’s more of a function that Frans Botha has been caught late in some fights before…
“Make no mistake I’m expecting this to be a totally one sided affair…
“People need to realise that looks, someone’s physique doesn’t necessarily transfer into boxing craftsmanship… I’ve seen tonnes of guys who look like Wladimir Klitschko who can’t fight, Frans Botha can fight. Sonny Bill Williams, as good a rugby player that he is, is just learning the sport.
“This fight to me looks like a total mismatch. The only mystery is how Frans Botha is the underdog.”
And Richard Dwyer is not alone with his opinion. Bob Jones and even recently retired Nader Hamden, who is a friend of SBW, have similar thoughts.
Unfortunately this just shows that the majority of the Australian sports betting market have no idea about boxing, which is not a good sign for boxing in Australia or that something is not quite right with the fight.
I don’t think that is the case in this fight and it’s unfair to tar everyone with the same brush, but given what’s been happening lately, unfortunately all special performances by athletes will be met with suspicion.
Guess we’ll just have to see how the fight pans out.
