Anyone else excited for the start of the AFL Season on Friday night? Its NAB cup time, the precursor to main season start. I can’t wait for football to begin again.
I am totally bemused by the way this ACC debacle has unfolded and couldn’t care less to hear about Buddy’s contract talks anymore.
This pep-tiding, doping, boozing, drink-driving, fixing, fighting, tanking preseason has sure kept the media outlets busy, but I’ve tuned out.
I don’t care for the rest of the rumours or over-stating. It seems to have been blown out of proportion and hopefully we can just get on with watching the footy soon.
Here’s what I’m looking forward to in the 2013 season. I have compiled an outlook for each team, the questions they need to answer and which individuals I think will make a big impact on the competition.
As a disclaimer, I am a Geelong fan, but this article was written with no bias!
Adelaide (4th)
The Crows should continue to improve. Kurt Tippett leaving will not slow them down as their midfield is too strong.
A one-legged duck and “Tex” Walker will kick enough goals for the Crows this year, with the supply they are getting. Walker is my favourite for the Coleman Medal and an injury-free Patrick Dangerfield to be top three in the Brownlow Medal.
I want to see more improvement from Rory Sloane and he could join the elite players of the league.
Brisbane (9th to 12th)
Another mediocre season. Nothing stands out as a defining reason for Brisbane to claim a finals spot. I am looking forward to seeing Jonathan Brown complete a season without being in another on-field train wreck or car accident.
Dayne Zorko is an intriguing player. He burst into their best team midway through last season, polling Brownlow votes late in the year.
Carlton (8th)
Can Mick Malthouse work his magic on a B grade list (Chris Judd and Marc Murphy aside)? Who is going to step up to make Carlton a contender?
I think they will make the finals if they have a healthy list of players to choose from. I am wondering if Malthouse is the key to getting the best out of Andrew Walker and Jarrod Waite. Both need to fulfil their obvious talent.
Collingwood (6th)
Lost Sharrod Wellingham and Chris Dawes gained the big Q-stick. Seems like smart business as he runs all day and will keep Travis Cloke closer to the 50m arc. I think other teams have more improvement in them than Collingwood.
They will be there in September, they are an experienced squad and are too fit to miss the finals. Will Steele Sidebottom continue on from his impressive 2012?
Essendon (9th to 12th)
Will Essendon be able to complete a consistent season? They have four weeks to put this turmoil in pre-season behind them. I would not be putting any hard earned on them making the eight.
It will be too hard this year. I look forward to seeing more of Dyson Heppell in the midfield as he’s a genuine star. Stewart Crameri being fully fit and playing a full season will also have a major impact on Essendon’s finals prospects.
Fremantle (5th)
Both West Australian teams will be stronger and play big roles in this year’s title race. Will Freo realise they need to play Kepler Bradley to provide all over support and decoys for their big men?
Watch for the lethal combination of Stephen Hill and Danyle Pearce, both in combination but also to free each other. The opposition can’t tag them all.
Geelong (7th)
Can they continue their one year on, one year off style of winning premierships? I don’t think so.
Matthew Scarlett is a huge loss to the club. Premiership players are getting older and some have already retired. Will the young players/new recruits be able to top-up the ageing stars?
There are too many questions and I am unsure if Chris Scott can produce the answers. Harry Taylor will dominate as Geelong’s number one defender.
Gold Coast (13th to 15th)
They will win more games than last year. Improvement will progress as long as there are no serious injuries to experienced players.
They need to start with winning half of their home games this season. I see Harley Bennell and Trent “The Cannon” McKenzie as elite players of the future, but I am looking for improvements in their consistency this year.
And put Gary Ablett as your super coach captain again.
GWS (bottom three)
Will they have second-year blues like Gold Coast? I don’t think so. They will challenge in a lot of games but I still doubt they can play four strong quarters each week.
I want to see more from young key forward Jon Patton. Can he live up to the big challenge of being the no.1 gun?
Callan Ward will lead strongly and poll well in the Brownlow Medal. Very happy they re-signed big ruckman Jonathan Giles, he was a standout performer last year.
Hawthorn (3rd)
Since the 1980s, Hawthorn have lacked the year-to-year consistency that current clubs Geelong and Sydney have managed to maintain.
Will their players take the next step and thrive from the GF heartbreak? I’m expecting them to challenge for the premiership again.
With all this talk of Lance Franklin, I want to see the defenders start to dominate. They brought in Brian Lake to strengthen the defence.
If they can’t show this in the big games, Hawthorn needs to be active again in next year’s trade period. Brendan Whitecross is an elite runner and ball user. Look for him to take pressure off senior midfielders and free them up.
Melbourne (13th to 15th)
They can’t keep their best 30 players together. They always seem to be a turnstile at trade period with other teams eagerly waiting to get hold of their players. I expect a handful of victories but not enough to make the finals.
The Demons can do the spectacular, but not consistently. Jack Watts performing well at centre half back is a key to any success they may have.
North Melbourne (9th to 12th)
They progressed last year, but can they sustain consistent victories throughout 2013. They need healthy ruckmen throughout the whole of the season to make the finals.
Who in their current best 22 shows the most shin-boner spirit? I’m looking for Jack Ziebell to step up.
He could be a clone of Adelaide’s Dangerfield if he’s ready to bust the packs regularly. I think the whole AFL community also wants to see Majak Daw playing at a higher level than the VFL.
Port Adelaide (bottom three)
New coach, new team? I doubt it.
If Port Adelaide wants a formula for success, they need to become more consistent and make players challenge each other for positions.
If it takes a couple scuffles on the training track so be it. They also need to continue to fight off interstate recruiters and keep their better players. I look at their list and struggle to find a player who generates positive discussion regularly.
I want to be surprised.
Richmond (9th to 12th)
I see improvement in Richmond, but I still can’t find a place in the top eight for them. They lack depth as a squad. I think they have 17 -18 really good players.
The Tigers of old will be there for us to see once again, just missing the finals. Troy Chaplin is a big recruit.
He will free up Alex Rance to become a dominating defender. Rance will become a great “quarterback” and Richmond will have to show him the money in future contract negotiations. Watch his progression, he will fire in 2013.
St Kilda
Brendon Goddard has gone and senior players will need to hold more of the burden.
For last few years St Kilda has asked for the younger players to step up, but none have become real stars of the competition.
I like the progression of Arryn Sippos and Ahmed Saad.
The little fellas around Stephen Milne will have to contribute a lot of goals for St Kilda to make the eight.
Swans (2nd)
They continue to be most consistent club in the competition. Stability = consistency = results.
They will be there again come the preliminary finals. Hannebery and Kieran Jack will become a dominating force for the Swans.
Lewis Jetta will only get better. I think the other clubs are scared of his speed and skills, with very few players able to tag him.
West Coast (1st)
Key recruit Sharrod Wellingham will strengthen an already strong midfield and provide more outside runners.
I’m looking for West Coast to be at the top come round 22. It’s the big men that have me excited, with Nic Natanui and Jack Darling to explode this season. These two will dominate teams in years to come.
Western Bulldogs (wooden spoon)
I can’t see where any great improvements will come from. The structure has gone. They have no key forwards/defenders of note who will dominate opponents every week. Dalhaus shocked the competition in the first half of last year.
Will he be able to shake the opposition taggers?
One season is a long time and I hope by the end of September 2013 some of the teams above surprise me greatly.

I’ve been planning on going to the NAB Cup opener since before all the the turmoil with a bunch of mates, some Essendon, some Collingwood, should make for interesting banter.
As each day passes I’m more confident Essendon will be fielding a full team in 2013 but agree the ASADA investigation is a massive distraction. Hopefully it will be resolved before the season.
Once cleared, I expect Essendon to make the 8.

I certainly think there will be alot more chatter in the grandstands regarding the off field issues. Hopefully some good footy played over the weekend to distract some of the fans and the media.

Be good to see some footy thats for sure. I’m expecting a very warm reception from the Collingwood faithful especially seeing as Essendon has not been proven to have down anything at this stage.

“Can Mick Malthouse work his magic on a B grade list (Chris Judd and Marc Murphy aside)? Who is going to step up to make Carlton a contender? ” I think you are underselling the list their by quite some margin. People seem to forget just how many injuries the blues had last year.
As for who will step up, I think at least one of Kreuzer, Hampson or Warnock will make their mark this year, one of Casboult or Mitchell will emerge as a genuine target, Tom Bell will build on his great season last year and hopefully the new coach will get Kane Lucas to finally take his chance.
Add to that the return from injury of Laidler & Henderson and a new lease on life (and role) for Gibbs and there is plenty of upside.
And where do Carrazzo & Simpson fall in you grade list?
I don’t think you will be calling the list B grade by the end of the year.

All valid comments Macca. I agree Kreuzer, Tom Bell, Carrazzo, Simpson even Gibbs all are not at their peaks, all have up sides. I think they are all B grade at present. Carlton did have a horrendous season with injuries. I gave about 100 words to each team. I wasn’t planning on criticing the whole list. Follow me on twitter @BIG_BIG_SHOW for more open discussion. I’d love to see Carlton suceed over Hawks, Collingwood, pretty much any other victorian team.

Not sure how you can rate Carrazzo as B Grade, his numbers last year were awesome plus he completely shut down the likes of Martin, Cotchin & Pendlebury. Simpson is a bit better than B grade (although not quite elite).
But my point is you say the Blues list is B Grade based on past performances but you are looking in the wrong direction, it is a list full of very talented players just heaidng into their best footy playing years. There wouldn’t be too many lists you would rather have as a new coach I would suggest.
I know you mentined Waite but I would say that he ahhs actually made the transition from potential to quality when his body stands up, if he plays 80% of games this year he will be another A grade player at the blues.

Macca its ok for others to have a differing opinion. in my opinion A grade is elite. im not going to start grading like a teacher and putting + and ++ and +++ after each player. I think there are only 2 elite players at present at Carlton. I am not saying that in 3months, 6 months 12months time there might not be more. Having one good or dominating season does not make you elite. Lets see how carazzo and Simpson go this year, i think they are both good/great players, just not elite. Hopefully Simpson hasnt shaved his beard off yet. I hear its one of the best getting around. I like your passion for support of whats seems to be your team. I am assuming you support Carlton.

The big big show – “I am not saying that in 3months, 6 months 12months time there might not be more.” That’s exactly my poont, you are predicting where a team will finish the season but not factoring in the liklihood of improvement of players.
And as I said every club only has so many A grade players – how many genuine A graders do Adelaide have or Sydney or even West Coast for that matter (especially given we can’t judge on last year alone) – it is the depth, age profile and potential that count. The blues list is no more B grade than a lot of teams you have finishing in the top 8. As the old saying a champion team beats a team of champions.
And have a look at Carrazzo’s stats since 2007, Averaging 24.3 Disposals, 4 tackles, 4.6 marks and last year was 13th in the league for clearances (on avergae – and I can’t find that stat for the last 6 years) all the while he has been shutting down the oppositions best on baller.

I think other clubs have more improvement then Carlton. For your sake as a Blues fan your hoping I’m wrong. Lets wait and see. I have factored alot into my ratings. I am not writing a dossier on every team. Why dont you do that ? Love to see your predictions for the upcoming season.
Sydney Elite – (2) Goodes, Ryan O’keefe,
Great players – endless very even squad – Jack, Hannebery, Jetta, Kennedy, Bolton, McVeigh, Richards all great but not the very elite. not everyone can be elite.
Adelaide Elite – (1) Thompson,
Great players – Dangerfield, Sloane, Walker, Ben “The Truck” Rutten
West Coast Elite – Darren Class, Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr
Great players – Priddis, Kennedy, Le Cras, Natanui, Beau Waters, Schuey by the end of this year.
Im sure i have missed some, I don’t have each teams squads in front of me. Moving on. Thanks for the feedback Macca. You have raised great points of discussion.

The big big show – I don’t think Kerr is “Elite” these days but regardless it demonstrates my point 3 of the teams you have finishing in the top 4 have the same number of A grade players yet it is only the blues who have a “b grade list” because they only have 2 A graders.
I also find it interesting that some of the “great players” listed have basically had 1 good season ie Jetta, Hannebery, Sloane etc.
I would be interested to see which Carlton players you would have as “great”

Just for you MACCA, i even got the whole carlton list up.
Great Carlton Palyers –
Cruizer (has dominated sparodically in games but not consistently – hence only a great player),
Carrazzo (fantastic tagger who gets his own ball too, hes in my Super coach team, needs another brilliant season before I personally call him elite, injury robbed him last year.),
Kade Simpson (elite runner, brilliant outside player, who can muck in too. Scores goals going forward). Last year was easily his best in terms of impact. He stepped up a level when murphy and carrazzo injured. Hes need to dominate games again this season before i throw him in the ELITE.
Bryce Gibbs needs to show more. hes only just B grade. Hasn’t dominated games. Hoping Malthouse uses him differently. I dont think he is your “quarterback” like Scarlett and Goddard, Beau Waters etc are.
Heath Scotland – Mr consistency but nox excel. He is like Jude Bolton For Sydney, Heath Shaw for Collingwood (give 100% every week) but not the ELITE.
NB: Jarrad Waite – Is a highly skillfull player. I think he could be as dominating as Pavlich if he played consistent seasons but that has not happened. Hence he is just a decent player in my view.

Again – It is a similar number of “great” players to Adelaide.
No mention of Betts. Throw him in and they have a similar number of “great players” as the swans as well.
Also isn’t a little inconsistent that Carrazzo who has been very consistent over 6 years needs 1 more season to become elite but Jetta has one good season and is “great”?

A b grade list is more than complimentary when considering the blues last year. Personally I think Carlton’s injuries exposed a real lack of depth at the club. Kruezer and Gibbs have stalled badly. Do you really believe its a grade? josh Kennedy from The swans is easily in the elite midfielders of the competition and no way known is Kerr there anymore. Some comments are a bit random, such as nth Melbourne must have healthy ruckmen? I mean doesn’t that apply to everyone?

The_Big_Big_Show said | February 13th 2013 @ 11:55pm | Report comment
I agree about Carlton, I put them at 8 but wouldn’t surprise if they missed the 8, as I said other teams have a lot more improvement then Carlton this year.
I think Kerr was exceptional late last year and still in the elite group of midfielders. Josh Kennedy had an amazing 2012 im keen to see how he goes this year, whether it can be maintained. he has the Watson, cousins, ablett ability to kick goals going forward. I think he will almost have to fight Kieran jack for those hard ball gets. He’s not far off elite especially saying his name in that company.
Nth Melbourne got rid of Hamish Macintosh , and have no genuine replacement , majak daw is untried at this level and I think he’s their no1 backup ruck man right?. No Goldstein no Nth Melbourne for this year anyway. If he’s fit and dominating on ball majak will fit in nicely.
I couldn’t fit in a huge elaboration for every comment I made and I’m not desperately defensive either. Just love the debate and banter.

Steele – You say Carlton’s injuries exposed a lack of depth but how many clubs could have covered losing their CHB in Henderson, their third tall defender in Laidler, their best tagger and clearance getter in Carrazzo, their 2 best ball getters in Murphy & Judd add on to that Simpson missing 3 weeks, then you lose their best marking forward in Waite, and their 3 back up tall forwards in Rowe, Casboult & Mitchell.
They also lost their best rebounding defender in Yarran for more than a month and their first choice full back missed 6 weeks for the season.
In the ruck department Shaun Hampson didn’t play after round 15, Kreuzer carried injuries all year and missed a couple of games and Warnock only managed 5 games.
This year on top of all the injured players returning they have added one of the best players in the draft in Menzel and last years TAC cup best and fairest.
So while last years list wasn’t A grade the fact they discovered some quality player in Casboult and Bell last year, McLean rediscovered his form and have some premium talent in Gibbs & Kreuzer plus some players who have been in the system for a couple of years with “potential” (Hampson, Warnock, Buckley, O’keefe & Lucas) who if just a couple of them come on with a change in coach I don’t see the real difference between the blues list and the swans or adelaide.

I would also say this, last year people bagged the blues for not have enough tall forwards or defenders, I argued counter to that.
This year without recruiting anyone else they have Jamison, Henderson & Laidler as their 3 first choice talls with McCarthy, White, Watson & McInnes (when he returns from injury) all with senior experience in reserve (with McInnes especially showing he can hold a spot in the first 22). Up forward they now have Waite, Casboult (who looks very good) & Mitchell plus Rowe and the resting ruckmen in Hampson/Warnock/Kreuzer.
I simply think people underestimate the blues list.

Couldn’t remember the name of the Morrish Medalist the blues picked up at 54 in last years draft but this is from the report from todays intra club match-
“In the Blues’ second intra-club match at Visy Park on Friday, Graham produced another mature performance in the engine room, collecting 17 disposals, including a game-high tally of 11 by half-time.
A hard and smart midfielder with good skills on either side of his body, Graham looks likely to be in the mix to make his AFL debut early in the premiership season. He already appears a draft steal.”
He was also in the best in last weeks game – could be one for the super coaches.
For the record McLean was BOG in both games, he picked up 22 possessions and 3 goals today.

MATE!!!!!
Given Im a West Coast fan, LOVED THE ARTICLE!!!
Having said that, we love to dream, Hawks, Swans and Crows will all be in the mix, WCE have a really tough draw, and a heap of 6 day turnarounds….
Will be interesting to see how Wellingham (and Cripps) improve the Eagles midfield. Nicoski and Lecras are the two big stories for me… if both those guys are fit, and kicking 40-50 goals a year each, then the Eagles will be hard to contain.
End of the day, it all comes down to injuries, if your best side is on the park for most of the year and can walk come September, you are half a chance.
Not sure I agree North are going to slip, they are the one side in the league that may be better than people think. As for the rest, think you are pretty well spot on.. maybe Brisbane to suprise on the upside as well

I don’t know how west coast can fit former bulldog hill, le cras, Nicosiki darling, Kennedy, cox in a forward line? Am I missing anyone . Le Cras to play on ball parts of quarters I think.

The NAB Cup should be dumped and make the AFL season another 4 weeks longer, it is far too short as it is today.
Do not buy the “too long” argument, because they players ARE training and ARE playing matches. So that argument is a moot point.
The 22 week season is a historical hang over, just like state governments. We have 22 weeks because back in the day, the players all had jobs, played cricket and the cricket season is by law able to access most footy grounds from 1st of Oct to the 31st of March.
Nowadays, the grounds in pro ranks of AFL are AFL specific venues except of for a few.
If I owned a club, I would rather my players would be injured playing serious games for points, not on a training track or in a pub brawl because of the free time they have now.

Agreed, although using the Gabba, SCG and the MCG may make the extended season difficult, but there are ways and means around it.

You can just play away games for a few weeks or do a deal.
Am sure the cricket folks can be bought off in anycase. They are not going to be playing internationals anytime soon between mid Feb and end of March most seasons. The state games can be played and enjoyed by punters in a nice parkland settings.

I agree with the last point about wanting any injuries to be in matches that are form premiership points. The issue with your point is though. If you lengthen the season, clubs will still want to play trial games. The AFL draw is a mess due to 18 teams fitting into 22 rounds. Still a problem if you extend it to 26 … Who plays who twice ? Love your comments though “Bunny”

Kernahan …one of the worst exponents of a drop punt you would ever want to see
Developed the helicopter punt, also known as the mongrel finger breaking up country punt, not that we ever want to see it again.

I too fear the eagles list, the house of pain is back unfortunately. As for Macca, someone tell him he’s dreaming!

Steele – You can’t deny the blues had a lot of injuries to key players last year. The team that plays round 1 this year will be much stronger than any that played after about round 3 last year.

Hopefully they lose round 1 then and we’ll see you again in 2014.
