Im Themightyquinn has ensconced himself in harness racing folklore after winning his third consecutive Inter Dominion Final on Sunday at Menangle Park.
After being sent out $3 equal favourite in front of a capacity crowd, the Western Australian champion settled in last place. Driver Gary Hall Junior was able to obtain a three-wide trail into the race at the 1300 metre mark.
In a soul stirring finale, Hall Junior eased his horse five deep in the home straight. The champion unleashed his trademark withering turn of foot and had hauled in the leader (Mah Sish) with 75 metres to go.
The eight year old son of Washington VC pulled away to win the ‘Melbourne Cup’ of harness racing by four metres from Mah Sish with Excel Stride finishing third.
An emotional Gary Hall Junior likened his champions acceleration to that of a galloper rather than a pacer shortly after the race.
“Today he was sensational. He just lost his ‘powder puff’ tag,” Hall Junior said.
Trained by Gary Hall Senior, Im Themightyquinn has now amassed a staggering $4,179,866 in prizemoney. His three consecutive wins equals the record set by Our Sir Vancelot (1997-99).
Should he return next year he will be out to equal the record number of total Inter Dominion wins set by Blacks A Fake (2006-08,2010).
The $250,000 Auckland Cup is the next target of Im Themightyquinn, a race which he won three years ago.
