It is, by common consent, the greatest one day race on the planet. Paris-Roubaix, also known as The Hell of the North, was first run in 1896.

This is the race that has made legends of a select few and destroyed so many more.

The winner’s list of the race is a ‘who’s who’ of cycling.

Only the Tour of Flanders can come close to matching the sheer majesty of this race, and even then, it still doesn’t quite match up.

Today’s Friday Flick is a ten minute taster of the full A Sunday In Hell film, made by Jorgen Leith in 1976.

The film stands the test of time beautifully, and is arguably the greatest cycling film ever made, in that it portrays the event from the eyes of the spectator, the participants and the organisers.

Its central characters feature the great Eddy Merckx and his fierce rivals of the day, Freddy Maertens and Roger de Vlaeminck.

Unfortunately, for one reason or another the full film has been taken down from YouTube, but there is enough in this segment to get your juices flowing.
