Michael Clarke will miss the fourth Test in Delhi with a back injury as Australia look to avoid a clean sweep under the captaincy of Shane Watson. Follow the action live on Roar Radio from 2.30pm AEDT.

The Australian skipper did not pass a late fitness Test after straining his back in the previous Test in Mohali.

Clarke will return home to Sydney for scans, and to work on a set plan of action to return to match fitness.

This will be a setback for the Australian team, as India stand poised to take their first ever clean sweep of a series against Australia, and their first ever result of four wins in a Test series.

His omission will mean that Watson, who was controversially dropped by Mickey Arthur after failing to adhere to team instructions before the third Test, will now become the 44th Test captain of the Australian cricket team. Matthew Wade will be vice-captain for the side.

Watson said it was an honour to be appointed to the role:

“It’s really a dream come true to be asked to captain your country. I’ve captained some one-day internationals, but to be asked to captain a Test will be the ultimate honour.

“It’s obviously very disappointing that Michael hasn’t come up, his batting and leadership will certainly be sorely missed, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and responsibility over the next five days.”

Of the other three players involved in ‘homework-gate’, Mitchell Johnson and James Pattinson take their place in the starting XI for Mitchell Starc and Moises Henriques. Usman Khawaja has not been selected.

In other team news, Nathan Lyon comes in to replace Xavier Doherty while Matthew Wade has been deemed fit to return and will replace Brad Haddin as wicketkeeper.
