Not even Hans Christian Andersen could have cooked this one up. Western Sydney Wanderers can clinch the Premier’s Plate with a win over bitter rivals Sydney FC in the Sydney Derby tonight. We’ll have live scores and minute-by-minute updates from 7.45pm AEDT.
Pinch yourself, because this is it. Top spot is a formality for the Wanderers, whose unprecedented success on debut in the competition has breathed new life into the sport in this country.
If the side can keep its record winning streak going for one more match, first position on the ladder – and, unbelievably, an AFC Champions League appearance next season – is locked in.
It’s clearly going to happen from here, barring a collapse of epic proportions from the Wanderers.
But Sydney FC need a win to keep their noses in front in the finals race, and won’t want all that happening on their watch.
Lucas Neill is back in the side, and with the city’s bragging rights on the line the Sky Blues will be looking to experienced players like the Socceroos skipper, poacher Joel Griffiths and of course, the great Alessandro Del Piero, to make the difference.
It should be a red and black night but don’t write off the boys in blue.
This is a derby and anything could happen – even though all signs point to another milestone occasion for Western Sydney.
Can Western Sydney seal the Premier’s Plate tonight with a win, or will the big brother step in and play the spoiler?
Find out from 7.45pm AEDT as we cover the Sydney Derby with live scores and commentary, and don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the space below.

I’m delving further…
Go to “passion is not a crime” Facebook page. Then go to posts by others.
You’ll see a post by some fellow by the name of Phil Allison. I don’t know if he is serious but you know what people are like…
Also has been said on CCM Facebook page.

‘Phil’ doesn’t come across as remotely believable. I won’t lie and say there weren’t isolated problems and machismo (as you get with every sporting rivalry), but certainly no organised “riot” as he is imputing.
With respect to the game, we had immense issues within the RBB tonight. The density of flogs was unprecedented.

Now if WSW lose on Fri to the Jets. And Heart throw the game on Sat to CCM. Now that’s a big problem. Why the FFA don’t play all the final round games simultaneously is beyond me. Then there’s the clogged up 5 & 6 positions to worry about. It’s open to dodgies. Until it happens they won’t learn.

CCM still need to win tomorrow first in Adelaide, otherwise WSW still win the Premiership with one game to spare. But yes I see what your saying about final round games simultaneously being played.

In the dying moments, Iacopo La Rocca is SENT OFF! RED CARD! ROSSO! It was a swinging elbow on Antonis that did it for him. Poor end to this match. Reckless stuff, it caught the young lad square in the face and that’d send anyone to the ground. That’ll hurt them next week and possibly for longer if the MRP get involved.

Another free kick for Wanderers, after Del Piero impeded Bridge. I think that’s what the foul was for anyway. ANYWAY – this is Cole territory. He scores, they win the premiership. Unfortunately, the wall did its job, to borrow one of football’s grandest cliches.

Free kick now for Sydney and it’s ADP territory! I think it was Antonis who won it. Perfect range for Del Piero – not too close, but close to the edge of the box and just to the left a little, perfect for his dangerous right foot. It’s just over – unfortunate for the Sky Blues.

You would have to say that while the Wanderers have had more of the ball, it’s been Sydney who’ve looked more dangerous and have gotten into better positions… As I say that Necevski is forced to come out and put an end to a WSW attack.

Del Piero flagged for offside, to the ironic cheers of the RBB.

Corner for Sydney after Cole puts out a low cross that was destined for nobody in particular. So a win for Sydney. ADP delivers… but the ref finds a foul on Kresinger and it’s a turnover.

ADP with some early touches, always looking to create. It’ll take something special to get past this rock-solid defence though, even if Beauchamp and Polenz aren’t involved.

Game still hasn’t settled yet, as you would expect for such a big fixture. But Wanderers are the ones with the pill more often than not.

Why do we do this Australia? I get he plays for your rivals Wanderers fans but you shouldn’t be booing Del Piero, who went up to take a corner for Sydney. It went out for another, in it comes… and nothing.

That was dirty from Tiago! Replays show he pretty much slapped Mark Bridge in the face. Bridge was down for a bit but he’s hardened up now. Bit of something from the Ric Flair playbook from the Brazilian.

Everyone is so up for this game, on both sides. Lots of running, pressing… Expect it to be like this for 15 minutes before the players realise they’re stuffed.

A lot of chat between Hill and Slater and the Fox studio boys over the Haliti-Kresinger swap. I like it myself. Dino’s not an amazing striker but he will mean Neill and Tiago cannot stop working. Both are prone to mistakes.

More amazing I think than the soccer’s vs Uruguay in 2005, it has nothing on this game.
And where is Schwarcher other side of the world right now, a good Marconi NSL boy, should come back tonight and play for WSW.
But we got Ante Covic, who is a better goalkeeper than Schwarcher, heck Hiddink dropped Scwarcher for Spider, he can’t be as good as he get wraps for.

Mate WSW are huge and getting bigger, they papers are even saying it’s massive the socceroos won’t be massive in Asia, fans wise,.
Bozza thinks WSW will be the biggest club in Asia.
Club teams make more money than national teams , just look at Man United Stevo.

I love how RBB and the wanderers have set up the atmosphere at games. It actually feels like you’re overseas except for the australian accents. I can’t wait to see how big this gets.

Well… yeah. A lot’s been said about this match. It means a lot anyway because it’s a derby, but each side has their own causes they’ll want to advance tonight and it’s all just very exciting. Let’s get started already.

Sydney FC: Necevski, Ryall, Emerton, Del Piero, Calvano, Antonis, Abbas, Grant, Triantis, J Griffiths, Neill. Subs – A. Griffiths, Chianese, Yau, Janjetovic (gk).
Only the one change for the visitors. The Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill is back from injury and replaces Adam Griffiths in the heart of defence. Griffo’s maybe a bit stiff there, but you can’t not play the captain of the country if you’ve got him there, ready to go.
Everything else remains the same, which means there’s no excuses for Sydney. This is practically Frank Farina’s best side and it is time for the veterans – Del Piero, Emerton, Joel Griffiths and now Neill – to produce when it is needed most.
Interestingly, Ivan Necevski starts again. He got his chance because Vedran Janjetovic was late last week and now the position is his to lose.

Western Sydney: Covic, Cole, D’Apuzzo, Topor-Stanley, Poljak, Kresinger, Appiah-Kubi, La Rocca, Bridge, Ono, Trifiro. Subs – Saliadarre (gk), Visconte, Elrich, Haliti.
A whole bunch of changes for the Wanderers. Out go Beauchamp, Polenz, Hersi, Mooy and Haliti. In comes Cole, Kresinger, Trifiro, Ono and Appiah-Kubi. But it’s hard to expect Western Sydney doing anything other than carrying on their merry way and extending that winning streak one week further.
Shinji Ono is fresh off signing a contract extension, Kresinger’s brute strength will give Tiago and Neill nightmares and young winger Appiah-Kubi will be buzzing to get an opportunity in a game like this.
