The Parramatta Eels NRL team have become the laughing stock of the internet in recent days following their humiliating 50-0 loss to the Sydney Roosters on Monday night.

Fans have wasted no time expressing their concern over the bogged down club, releasing memes left right and centre on Facebook.

The latest series of mockery of the Eels is not new to them though, coming after a similar situation following the side’s dismal wooden spoon effort in last year’s season.

Knowing the Eels are now used to being teased, fans seem to be rather confident in jumping aboard the bandwagon and handing out jokes.

NRL Facebook pages NRL Gossip, NRL Memes and NRL Memes and Humour appeared to be the main publisher of such memes on Facebook, posting them and thanking their creators.

One of the most popular memes was a photo of a Parramatta guernsey, with the text “If your misses is wearing this to bed tonight you know you ain’t scoring”.

This example attracted 1047 Facebook “likes” and a whopping 833 “shares”.

Another popular example, which attracted 1464 “likes” and 277 “shares” pictured a bored looking young man sitting in a car with the text “Just waiting…for Parramatta to score”.

These are just a couple of examples of many memes, ranging from targeting individual Parramatta players, to the whole team.

Some are satirical, others just plain silly or even rude.

But when one looks at the number of “likes”, “shares” and comments, it is easy to see why the Parramatta Eels are the NRL’s internet laughing stock at the moment.

“Faith in humanity is restored” sarcastically reads another meme, with the text over a graphic of the 50-0 scorecard.

In a modern world where misfortunes truly go viral, the Eels must simply start winning to end this madness.
