Demons' growth the big issue

After all the insignificant, beat-up issues the AFL media has been peddling this year, it is great to see they have finally begun to tackle a serious development in our game – beards.

That’s right, excessive facial hair has become the latest topic to be discussed in our media, and not only in jest.

There has been a undoubted resurgence in AFL players growing beards, and not just your average, neatly trimmed variety.

These bearded players are beginning to resemble members of the Kelly gang at their most hirsute.

Taylor Walker and Ivan Maric had a bet regarding the growing of a mullet and the naming rights to each other’s first born. This seems to have begun similar bets regarding beard cultivation among some clubs, or perhaps it is the latest bizarre fashion trend.

Either way, the disappearance of the razor has generated an astounding level of discussion.

Wayne Carey stated the beard growing at Melbourne was symptomatic of the shambles that is the AFL’s cellar dweller.

When you are going well, these things are seen as humorous or even a positive form of team bonding. However, when you’re struggling as badly as Melbourne are, everything out of the ordinary is scrutinised and often labelled as an unnecessary distraction.

As the outlandishly dressed Payne Stewart once said, “If you dress like this, you better be able to back it up.”

Needless to say, the second step for Melbourne in their current crisis after pushing out their CEO will be to introduce their latest sponsorship signing – Gilette.

If haircuts are the be-all in form, then you might expect 22 chrome domes to run out for the Dees this week, hoping to tap into just a little of the magic of the Gold Coast captain.

It appears two of the better beards at Demon land – Jack Watts and Tom Gillies – have actually been dropped. They are both listed as having appointments at their local hairdressers to have the offending growth removed.

Both are expected to make a full recovery and be available for selection again next week, as long as they pass a stubble test!
