The refs cost the Cows again

The Rabbitohs played a good game of football on Friday night, however the final scoreline doesn’t indicate how close the Cowboys came.

The North Queensland pack matched the Rabbitohs’ and even got on top of them for certain periods in the match.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they were once again at the receiving end of some atrocious calls from the referees.

It seems as though the Cowboys receive more poor calls than most teams, especially when playing in Sydney.

For all non-Cowboys supporters out there, don’t say that this ridiculous. All teams get dud calls from time to time, but it’s a fact of life for the Cowboys and their fans.

I remember the match they played against the Tigers at Campbelltown last year as a prime example of this. Not to mention the semi-final against the Sea Eagles.

In fact, whenever they play in Sydney nowadays, I expect the referees to determine the outcome of the game more so than the plays of the opposing team.

Friday night was no exception.

The Cowboys had two tries disallowed by the video referees.

I didn’t have much quarrel with the first decision. The ball looked as though it probably made contact with Gavin Cooper’s hand before he kicked it, although I have seen less convincing tries awarded in the past.

However, the second no try ruling left me fuming.

Jarred Maxwell awarded the try to Brent Tate on the field, meaning the video referees had to find ‘conclusive’ evidence to overturn the decision.

Since Maxwell’s decision was overturned and no justification was given as to why, I assume they determined Tate had knocked the ball on mid-air.

I implore you, review the footage of the incident. Tate’s hands was nowhere near the ball. Even if it made contact with his forearms, they aren’t considered to be part of the ‘hands’.

I just don’t understand why the try wasn’t awarded. If they awarded Kieran Foran’s against the Cowboys last year, what was the issue with this one? Where was the conclusive evidence needed to overturn the decision?

Meanwhile, the Rabbitohs had no problems when it came to the decisions of the video referees.

When Greg Inglis dived under the posts early in the second half, I didn’t think he had sufficient control of the football when he grounded it.

Yet it seemed to be good enough for the officials sitting in the box and was awarded without much review.

Even the Channel Nine commentators, whose views are generally biased towards the teams facing the Cowboys, displayed their sentiment towards the Northerners’ plight.

During the game, Ray Warren made a comment along the lines of, “One could say that the Cowboys have been on the end of some bad calls tonight.” To which Peter Stirling replied, “They haven’t blown up over any of them, so they mustn’t feel too bad about the outcome.”

No Sterlo, they’re just used to poor calls going against them since it happens every week.

The Cowboys are playing the Roosters at home next week. Hopefully, the decisions made are fair and the winner is determined by the team who plays the best on the night, not by the calls of the men in pink.
