When it comes to discussing State of Origin, do we tend to take our eyes of the facts?

Do we read too much into the ‘controversial selections’ and the ‘off-field distractions’? When does there come a time where New South Welshman say enough is enough?

The boys in blue have vowed that nothing will distract them ahead of Wednesday night’s much anticipated battle, and as a viewer I pray to the Lord this is the case.

It’ll be a case of Mal Meninga opening the cage and sending 17 blood-thirsty beasts out to eat the Baby Blues up. There can be no excuse for losing, other than that we were beaten. Sounds simple, I know, but Origin is never that simple.

Origin is about the personal battle, it isn’t a game of football anymore, it’s Queensland versus New South Wales, that state hatred.

I just fear the fact that New South Wales was so superior will result in a Queensland side so much more fierce.

Nate Myles will run that bit harder, Johnathan Thurston will be that yard or two greater, Cooper Cronk will kick that little bit more precisely, Greg Inglis will be that little bit more dominant, Billy Slater will be that little bit more brilliant. Others I haven’t mentioned will do their job.

As a New South Welshman, I often don’t have anything nice to say about Queensland, but one thing I can’t take away from them is that they are a legendary football team.

The Blues wanted it more in game one. Being starved of success for seven years is something no one wants to endure, that fact is evident in every day life. I’m just nervous that the beast has been poked.

I play club rugby league, and every time I run out, no matter who we are playing, I believe we can do it. My thoughts on this Origin encounter are absolutely no different, but we will need to be a hundred percent better than we were in game one, because Queensland will be.

There’s no room for excuses.

Come on New South Wales! Bring it home boys!
