Hussey hopeful of Ashes turnaround

Former Test star Michael Hussey says he’s glad he’s no longer enduring the stress the Australian cricket team is experiencing but he’s hopeful they can turn their Ashes woes around.

The prolific left-handed batsman retired from Test cricket earlier this year, citing desire to spend more time with his family as the primary reason, and he’s been sorely missed in the middle order as the batting line-up collapsed to lose the first two Ashes Tests.

While Australia’s dismal batting displays sparked predictable calls for the 79-Test veteran to be coaxed out of retirement, Hussey ruled it – again – on Monday.

Hussey, who confirmed he would play for Big Bash League side Sydney Thunder this summer, said he wasn’t in any kind of shape to contemplate a Test comeback.

“I’ve been watching the boys over in England, it’s been tough for sure, obviously the boys are doing it tough at the moment,” Hussey said.

“I’m sort of glad I’m not really in that pressure situation, those tough situations.

“There’s a lot of stress and tension involved, so I certainly haven’t missed being out there on the international stage.”

Renowned for his positivity and professionalism, Hussey remained optimistic about Australia’s Ashes campaign despite them going down 2-0 after a 347-run thrashing at Lord’s on Sunday.

“It’s obviously not the greatest start, but I’m still hopeful,” Hussey said.

“I think at times like these the guys have got to really stay tight together and try and look for the positives and try and get back in a positive frame of mind.

“And maybe just identify one or two things each, individually and collectively.”

Hussey said he was looking forward to the challenge of trying to improve the Thunder, who finished bottom in the BBL last season and didn’t win a game.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, one I’m really looking forward to,” Hussey said.

“It’s an exciting challenge.”
