Brisbane co-captain Jonathan Brown hopes the AFL club didn’t remove coach Michael Voss without having already received expressions of interest from replacement candidates.

Voss, who captained a Lions side including Brown to three premierships, was told on Tuesday the job was no longer his.

Brown said he didn’t believe there was a replacement already locked in, but doubted the Lions would have acted without having confidence on that front.

“I don’t think a coach has agreed but you would hope that there’s positive indications,” the star forward told the Nine Network’s AFL Footy Show on Thursday night.

“I’m pretty confident the club wouldn’t be going into this cold.

“I’m sure they’ve got some candidates in mind and they’ve had some positive indications from them.”

Brown said he had known for weeks, as Voss did, that the Lions were interested in former Sydney premiership coach Paul Roos.

He said it would be good for both the club and its supporters if they could land the former Fitzroy and Swans star, although so far Roos has indicated no desire to coach again.

“Clearly Paul Roos would be the number one option for the club and I think that would be a good thing,” Brown said.

“He’s a proven coach, he’s a premiership coach.

“He’d certainly be appealing to the supporters because he’s a premiership coach.

“But also for all the Lions faithful out there, he’s a legend of the Lions.”
