The third stage of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana will be a joy to viewers eyes as the race hugs the Atlantic Coast for the 184km race from Vigo to Mirador de Lobeira/Vilagarcia de Arousa. Join me from midnight AEST for live coverage.

Only the Vuelta a Espana can call a stage with a summit finish a flat stage.

How do they get away with it? I have no idea but I do know that it is stages like today’s that endears the final Grand Tour of the year to our hearts.

So, what can you expect in today’s stage?

Riders will spend most of the day traversing the coastline of Galicia in north-western Spain on the 172.5km route.

Riding around the Atlantic coastline may not afford the riders an opportunity to take in the sights, however, for us viewers, it should provide some spectacular scenery.

Expect a breakaway to escape early on and they most likely will be given a reign to create a large gap.

Today may well be a good day to get your team’s sponsors some valuable TV airtime.

The first 180km will be fairly flat with two intermediate sprints, the first at the 118km mark and the second at 154km.

It is, however, the final kilometres of the day that will provide the best viewing.

The stage will finish atop the Mirador de Lobeira after a short ascent. The climb isn’t as tough as past year’s but it will likely spread the peloton out.

Today could be a day for Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde to show us he’s after stage wins in preparations for the World Championships in Florence next month rather than overall GC victory.

He enjoyed keeping his eye on the race’s GC contenders yesterday but today he could well lead the peloton over the line.

Join me tonight from midnight AEST for the live blog of the stage.
