The 2013 Vuelta a Espana recommences after the first of two scheduled rest days. As the peloton tackle the 38.8km Individual Time Trial from Tarazona to Tarazona. Join us for live updates from 12.00am AEST.

A short Stage 11 sees the riders depart individually from the town of Tarazona, climb the Category 3 Alto del Moncayo, and descend down in to the town of Tarazona to finish.

At roughly 4% in average gradient, the Alto del Moncayo shouldn’t prove insurmountable to the time trial specialists.

With the stage favouring a constant application of power, rather than multiple bursts of acceleration, the strongmen of the peloton are still favoured by the parcours over the punchy climbers.

So while the climb may lessen the time losses that would occur during a flat time trial, it doesn’t entirely suit the climbers.

The stage will favour the most complete rider; someone able to cope with the gradient, descend competently, and maintain a constant high average speed throughout the course.

Which on paper suits Vincenzo Nibali the greatest in the battle for the Maillot Rojo (Red Jersey), with the Italian able to save ludicrous amounts of time thanks to his daredevil descending skills.

Despite the presence of the Alto del Moncayo, the outstanding favourite for today’s stage is Tony Martin of Omega Pharma – Quick-Step.

However, Fabian Cancellara and the other time trial specialists among the peloton, such as Marco Pinotti, will be hopeful of snatching a surprise victory should the German falter.

Prepare the caffeine and steady yourself for yet another exciting battle between the General Classification heavyweights in the 2013 Vuelta a Espana.
