Postecoglou sees Socceroos silver lining

Ange Postecoglou says he would be unable to double up as Socceroos and Melbourne Victory coach, if he wins the three-man race to replace the sacked Holger Osieck.

With Football Federation Australian chairman Frank Lowy determined to appoint a home-grown national coach, the Melbourne Victory boss is considered the favourite ahead of Central Coast’s Graham Arnold and Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic.

Postecoglou said he had yet to have any formal contact with the FFA, although he understood that the governing body had spoken to the Victory.

The club are likely to seek substantial compensation were they to lose Postecoglou who still has two years of his contract to run.

“I tend to throw myself into whatever I do and they are both enormous jobs,” Postecoglou said on Thursday.

“I don’t think you should take short cuts or half measures with either job.”

The FFA could announce the new national coach as soon as next week, allowing him to begin preparations for the 2014 World Cup finals and the 2015 Asian Cup.

Osieck was sacked after the Socceroos suffered a 6-0 drubbing against France in Paris last week – a month after being belted by the same scoreline by Brazil.

Interim coach Aurelio Vidmar took charge for a face-saving 3-0 win against lowly-ranked Canada in London on Tuesday night.

“It’s pretty hard to say from the outside but I reckon there were some promising signs,” said Postecoglou.

“I know it was Canada but it was good to see Matthew Leckie score.

“I thought Dario Vidosic had a game and Rhys Williams looked promising.”
