Shock win can be series-defining: Voges

Australia will look to harness the momentum gained in Saturday night’s thrilling win to shut India out of the remainder of the series.

Australia know it is possible to bounce back from such a morale-shattering loss – they’ve done it themselves this tour.

Just three days before James Faulkner turned the series on its head by taking 30 runs off one Ishant Sharma over, which has given Australia a 2-1 series lead and a full head of steam.

Winning the remaining four matches would hand Australia the No.1 ODI ranking, relegating India to No.2, and Australian middle-order batsmen Adam Voges believes the time is right to strike.

“I’d like to think you can set a series up with a win like that,” Voges said.

“After the loss in Jaipur the other night we were pretty flat.

“To make 359 in a game and then lose pretty comprehensively in the end, that took a bit of the wind out of our sails.

“The way our bowlers came back after what happened in Jaipur was really encouraging.

“It was obviously quite demoralising, game two, but I thought (our bowlers) were outstanding (in Mohali).”

Voges said while India’s confidence would now be rocked, Australia had instilled in themselves a belief that any total is manageable – words Rohit Sharma used to describe India’s approach after the Jaipur blitz.

“India would’ve been very confident coming into (the Mohali) game,” Voges said.

“But that was the beauty of the result. We were able to fight our way back into the contest and end up winning the game.”

The team would take a lot of confidence from the outcome of Saturday’s match, Voges said.

“I know 2-1 up in a seven game series is still a long way to go. There’s ebbs and flows in every game and in a seven-game series there’s going to be plenty of them.

“But we know that if we do need to chase again in the future that we can chase down those big totals.”
