Melbourne Victory have formally appointed inagurual captain Kevin Muscat to fill the vacant coaching position left by Ange Postecoglou.

The 40-year-old Muscat has signed a two-year deal that takes him through until the end of the 2014/15 season.

After retiring from the Victory at the conclusion of the club’s 2011 Asian Champions League campaign, Muscat returned to the club as assistant to Mehmet Durakovic and Jim Magilton before working under Postecoglou in the 2012/13 season.

The former Wolves, Rangers and Millwall defender will take the reins for the Victory’s clash with Wellington Phoenix on Monday night.

Current youth coach Darren Davies will step in as Muscat’s assistant, with former All Whites striker Vaughan Coveny promoted to the role of head coach of Melbourne Victory’s youth team.

Muscat takes control with the Victory currently occupying fourth on the A-League ladder, unbeaten after three matches and coming off a promising 1-0 win over first-placed Brisbane Roar last Friday night.

Once described as ‘the most hated man in English football’, Muscat earned a reputation for his physicality as a player and it will be interesting to see whether this transpires in his coaching style.

More to follow.
