Victory set to unveil Muscat as coach

Melbourne Victory is set to end an uncomfortable fortnight by elevating favourite son Kevin Muscat to the senior coaching role.

The widely-expected appointment is expected to be announced on Thursday morning, and completes Muscat’s long journey at the club he began as foundation captain in 2005.

Muscat skippered Victory to its two premierships across six playing seasons before joining the backroom staff.

He served under Mehmet Durakovic, Jam Magilton and Ange Postecoglou and represents the best chance for the club to transition without disruption just three weeks into the new season.

The departure of Ange Postecoglou to the Socceroos role created an unwelcome vacancy at the centre of the country’s biggest football club.

Faced with the prospect of managing another coaching search, the club has done as the Football Federation of Australia has and gone local with its appointment.

Muscat has led the Victory once before as interim coach, a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Jets in January 2012 following Durakovic’s sacking.

Victory sit fourth on the table but could go top with a win against Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park on Monday night.

Muscat could be assisted by Micky Petersen, with speculation the former Socceroo could be brought in to assist.
