Verema was the horse that finished last in the 2013 Melbourne Cup. Ruscello was 23rd and the last horse past the winning post. So who was last?

For the purpose of sweeps and those that need to know, it’s up to you to decide who came ‘last’.

Verema didn’t finish the race and some people may say she was the last horse in the Melbourne Cup.

Ruscello, however, was the last of those that actually completed the 3200m course.

Verema, a French mare owned by the Aga Khan, broke down at the 2000m mark of the Melbourne Cup and was subsequently sadly euthanised. She broke a cannon bone in her right fore leg.

Ruscello, who led the Melbourne Cup field at a good clip, dropped out of the race at the 800m and was finally beaten by more than 50 lengths.

The Roar’s own sweep is paying out Verema as last – she took part in the race and ultimately, and tragically, didn’t finish. Our thoughts are with all connections of Verema.

“It is with regret that we confirm that Verema had to be euthanised after suffering a fracture to its right foreleg during the running of the Emirates Melbourne Cup.

“This was an unfortunate accident that happens infrequently in racing and our sympathies are extended at this time to the Aga Khan, Alain de Royer Dupre and the connections of Verema.”

A post mortem will be performed at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic as is standard practice.
