It was agonisingly close to a big payday for globetrotter Red Cadeaux and trainer Ed Dunlop, who ran second for the second time at the Melbourne Cup to go with his runner-up performance in 2011.

Melbourne Cup 2013: What the jockeys said

Red Cadeaux jumped as a $61 chance and was not fancied in any betting markets despite his fantastic record at Flemington. Ultimately, he paid $11 for the place.

While connections of Red Cadeaux can be satisfied with $900,000 for running second, first place would have claimed $3.6million.

Nevertheless, running second in the world’s richest handicap race over two miles is an outstanding achievement for the eight-year-old gelding.

In the past two years, he has raced in England, Ireland, France, Australia, Japan, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore to be one of the world’s most travelled horses.

He completely franked his form after a lacklustre run in the Irish St Leger last month when he finished ten lengths behind Voleuse De Coeurs.

But at Flemington, Red Cadeaux is a completely different horse.

This was his third attempt at the Melbourne Cup after running second by the smallest of margins in Cup history behind Dunaden in 2011.

Dunlop bought him back in 2011 where he was a fancied chance but took too long to get going and finished eighth.

It’s been a tough few months for Red Cadeaux who has had a lean few months during the European racing season.

Getting on in years, he carried 3kg more than he did in 2011 but produced his finest work to push eventual winner, Fiorente, all the way to the line.

On Saturday night, Red Cadeaux drew barrier 23 – the second widest gate in the field. In his post draw interview, Dunlop was visibly distressed about the barrier but eventually laughed it off.

Given a perfect ride by Gerald Mosse who won the 2010 Melbourne Cup aboard Americain, Red Cadeaux positioned midfield and stalked the leaders.

Mosse pulled at the top of the straight and his mount gave him a fantastic kick. Red Cadeaux hit the lead at the 350m mark and kicked clear of third.

Fiorente eventually increased the pressure and Red Cadeaux boxed on gallantly but eventually lost to another Melbourne Cup runner up.

With today’s winnings, Red Cadeaux has now won $6million in prize money and may head off to Hong Kong next to defend the Hong Kong Vase in front of his owner, Ronald Arculli.

As an eight-year-old it is unlikely Red Cadeaux will be back next year but then again, the same thing was said last year.
