Dees already showing Roos' influence

Subtracting one captaincy and adding one Roos equals one happy Jack Trengove.

It’s the formula the young midfielder hopes will improve his game as the Demons look to rebuild under new coach Paul Roos.

Trengove said he consulted Roos on the “very tough” decision.

“The best thing for the club and myself is me fulfilling my full potential as a player,” he said.

“I feel as though the last few years I haven’t played up to the potential that I’m capable of … to take a bit more on myself to fulfil my potential is what I came to agree at the end.”

He denied he’d been thrown into the role too soon, despite being the youngest-ever VFL-AFL captain, saying he was not aware of the added pressure.

“I’m the type of person to go and grab any opportunity possible, so when (Mark Neeld) came to me and said, `You’re going to be captain’, I jumped at it,” he said.

“When you sit back and really think about it, there was probably a bit of added responsibility and pressure put on me … we all shouldered that together as a playing group.”

“I’m not living in any regrets at all. I’d do the exact same thing again.”

Roos will be the fifth coach the young South Australian has played for in as many years, and it’s clear he is relishing the prospect.

“It’s not a great reputation to have, new coaches coming in on a regular basis,” Trengove said.

“He’s been awesome so far. He has that aura of confidence about him. Obviously he’s got the runs on the board to bring that.

“Everyone just feels a bit better and more up and about because of the man that he is.

“Everything he says the boys are hanging off at the moment.”

While it’s clear the pep is back in this Demon’s step, Trengove says the players know Roos doesn’t come with a magic wand.

“He’s not going to come in and suddenly change everything because we’ve still got around the same playing group together.

“We’ve got to take a lot of responsibility on ourselves to get stuck into what Roosy wants to do and make sure we’re doing it from day one.”

Trengove missed much of the 2013 pre-season with his left foot in a moon boot but said the injury had completely cleared.
