No matter what headlines Matt Moylan creates in 2014 the gun rookie says he won’t be reading any of them.

Moylan burst onto the NRL scene in spectacular fashion, making the Penrith No.1 jersey his own and playing a key role in his side’s mid-season surge when they won six of eight games to emerge as possible top-eight contenders before fading.

Coach Ivan Cleary was so impressed with 22-year-old’s efforts that he allowed City Origin representative Lachlan Coote move to North Queensland.

Moylan is a player capable of returning the Panthers back to the finals for the first time since 2010, but the 181cm, 94kg fullback, who can also play five-eighth isn’t paying any attention to the hype.

“It did surprise me some of the attention I got last year (in the media) but I didn’t read much into it,” Moylan told AAP.

“I knew I had to back it up each week, if I wanted to play grade. I think if you start looking at all of that you can go backwards so I didn’t read the papers or anything like that.

Moylan knows that now opposition teams have seen what he can do, he’ll need to work harder on his game if he is to avoid the dreaded second-season syndrome.

“I was confident coming into first grade but now I know how quick it is and how physical it is I know what I need to work on in the off season,” he said.

“I’m really excited about what next season is going to bring and I’m just trying to build on last season and the games I played then.

“I just have to train harder and and get bigger, quicker and stronger so they don’t know what’s coming.”
