Tonight, the Gold Coast Convention Centre plays host to the AFL’s draft class of 2013. The best young players from across the country will descend with the hope that their name will be read, and their dream of an AFL career realised.

Beyond the top few picks, this years class is regarded as open and relatively rich in potential. For clubs not featuring in the top 10, this means there will be bargains to pick up right through the first twenty or thirty picks.

Adelaide and Essendon will be hoping this is the case after both lost big name players in Bernie Vince and Stewart Crameri to secure second round picks after theirs were stripped following their respective punishments from the AFL.

Essendon, in particular, will be hoping they can make a shrewd choice with pick 26, as their punishment also sees them without a pick in the important early rounds of the 2014 draft.

Collingwood, on the other hand, will be hoping top 10 picks prove priceless. They are positioned strongly to bring a future star or two into their ranks and keep their run of successive finals appearances in tact. They are the only 2013 finalists to possess a pick in the top 10, and they’ve got two of them.

GWS are set to bring in their fourth #1 draft pick – and it’s almost certain to be giant forward Tom Boyd. With pick 2 also in their possession, it looks likely that midfielder Josh Kelly will also be donning orange in 2014.

With pick 3, the Saints will be looking to replenish the talent on their list after losing big name players in consecutive trade periods. They look set to lock away Jack Billings, a classy midfielder who loves to kick goals.

The rest however, becomes a little more wait-and-see. Who knows what surprise picks will be thrown up when the 2013 AFL Draft gets underway.
