The Australian Rugby Union has become one of the first major sporting bodies in the world to display a gay cup in their trophy cabinet.
The ARU on Wednesday received the Bingham Cup, also known as the Gay Rugby World Cup, and will have it on display in its trophy cabinet until it’s contested next in Sydney in August 2014.
Teams from over 15 nations will battle for the trophy, including current champions, Sydney Convicts, who handed the trophy over to ARU CEO Bill Pulver.
Also involved in Wednesday’s ceremony was Wallaby forward and Bingham Cup ambassador, David Pocock.
“In terms of Australian sport, they (Sydney Convicts) are obviously a great team in their own right,” Pocock told AAP.
“But I think in terms of Australian sport, the advocacy they do around raising awareness of homophobia and really challenging it within sport is so important.
“It’s so important that we have athletes in Australia speaking out about that.”
The event follows the ARU’s announcement in August of the development of an Inclusion Policy aimed at strengthening Australian Rugby’s commitment to stamp out discrimination and homophobia in rugby.
The policy will be finalised before the 2014 Bingham Cup.
