The first day of competition is over in the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens with today the last day of the competition.
How ideal it is that this tournament is called the ‘Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens’, a dedication to the great man, who shaped the political geography of South Africa.
The Australian sevens team has had a poor outing and is now in the Bowl competition, playing its quarter-final against Zimbabwe.
In the Cup quarter-final, Fiji will play Samoa. New Zealand will play Kenya, Argentina will play France and South Africa will play Portugal.
It has to be said that Fiji would be favourites to beat Samoa after they showed their prowess last week in beating New Zealand by a record margin of 44-0 and winning the Dubai Sevens against South Africa.
New Zealand would be out for revenge and would be favourites to beat Kenya. And bearing no upsets, Fiji would meet New Zealand in the semi-finals.
The other side of the draw will see France play Argentina and it’s difficult to predict who could qualify, with both teams pretty much on the same page.
In the last quarter-final hosts South Africa will play Portugal, who has qualified for the first time.
For South Africa, this would be an emotional tournament on the back of the passing away of Nelson Mandela and South Africa will be in full force to win this tournament as a dedication to the late Nelson Mandela.
One thing for sure is that the tournament’s final day should throw up a few surprises and exciting Sevens rugby.
