Kevin Pietersen, the man dubbed England’s walking ego, again walked straight into Australia’s trap.
And Pietersen has to deal with that fact, says his teammate Ian Bell.
“As a batter, you want to put a high price on your wicket … that is what all great players have done,” Bell said.
“I’d say Kev is a great player.
“Look, he hasn’t played very well and there is no hiding from that or running away from it.”
Pietersen made four on Saturday, falling to Australia’s midwicket trap for the second time in three innings.
Despite two Australians perched at shortish-midwicket, Pietersen tried to whip through the leg side – and was caught by George Bailey, just as he was in England’s first dig in their first Test loss in Brisbane.
Australia’s seven-wicket hero Mitchell Johnson was surprised Pietersen fell for it again.
“He has played that shot again – we do know that he was practising it in the nets this morning so I think he wants to play that shot,” Johnson said.
“But on wickets like this, it’s probably not on.
“It was a plan, definitely … we know that he doesn’t like to be tied down so we had the field set exactly how we wanted it and the plan came off.”
