Ben Johnson of Drapac Professional Cycling will miss this week’s New Zealand Cycle Classic after a training accident over the weekend.

While out on a training ride on the Sunshine Coast he was involved in a collision with a vehicle towing a caravan.

Johnson suffered a deep gash on his left elbow, requiring six stitches as well as multiple abrasions.

“I am really disappointed not to be in New Zealand,” Johnson said in a statement.

“I was coming off some great form following the Bright training camp and Nationals and I was looking forward to racing.

“I had a good opportunity to get a result there and Drapac has sent a very strong team over. I’m devastated.”

Johnson’s collision comes just as Queensland is working toward implementing new laws requiring drivers to leave a metre gap when overtaking cyclists.

An integral voice in this campaign has been The Amy Gillet Foundation.

Tracey Gaudry, CEO of the Amy Gillet Foundation said, “Placing safety in our consciousness immediately changes the way we interact with others and use shared spaces.

“It’s important to remember we’re sharing the road with people, a moment of distraction or frustration can have potentially fatal consequences.”

Dutch rider Wouter Wippert will replace him in his first race for the team.

The New Zealand Cycle Classic will run from January 29 to February 2 through the Manawatu region of New Zealand.

105 riders will take part in the event which is New Zealand’s and Oceania’s only UCI 2.2 event.
