Australian freeskier Russ Henshaw is through to the Winter Olympics slopestyle finals, finishing seventh in qualifying at Rosa Khutor on Thursday.

Henshaw was consistent across the two runs, but it was his 84.60 first-up effort that got him through, backed up by a solid 83.40 second run.

It was the first time Henshaw had combined his run in competition, and he was happy to put it down under pressure.

“It felt good, and the feeling of riding into the finish with all these people here is surreal,” he said.

“I took it kind of easy in qualifying, I just put a run down I knew I could do, and thought that would score well and then I’ll step it up in the final.”

Henshaw, 23, showed little sign of the double injury hit he took at the X Games last month, crashing heavily in training and then landing awkwardly on his knee in competition.

American Joss Christensen topped the qualifiers, landing 91.00 first up and upping the ante with a 93.20 second run.

Norway’s Andreas Haaveit was second with 88.00, followed by Briton James Wood on 87.20 and X Games gold medallist Nick Goepper (87.00).
