Former Test and Queensland State of Origin winger Jharal Yow Yeh has retired from rugby league.
Yow Yeh, who suffered a horrific lower leg injury while at the top of his game two years ago, announced his decision at a Brisbane Broncos media conference this morning.
The 24-year-old says he couldn’t continue to fight complications brought about by the badly broken leg.
Yow Yeh, who made his return to the field playing for Norths in the Queensland Cup late last season, was overjoyed when he played for the Broncos in the NRL pre-season, lining up at centre against North Queensland.
But the injured ankle took pace and agility away from one of the best finishers in the game and he realised he could not play at the level required.
“He has left no stone unturned in that goal, and it was wonderful to see him play again during the trials this year,” White said.
“But now it is time for him to move on to what is next.”
Broncos players and officials gave Yow Yeh a standing ovation as he delivered his retirement press conference.
Despite his brave comeback falling short of where he’d hoped, Yow Yeh said he was content.
“I’m happy this is off my back now,” he said.
Yow Yeh played three Tests for Australia in 2011, selected for his Kangaroos debut before he’d represented the Maroons in State of Origin.
He also played three Origin matches, scoring two tries, as Queensland triumphed over NSW in the 2011 series.
Yow Yeh is expected to remain involved with the Broncos and rugby league.
“He has a bright future – rugby league and sport has always been the vehicle for that, and will continue to be as he to builds a career off the field,” White said.
