The Canterbury Bulldogs today announced that they have torn up the lucrative four-year deal offered to Cronulla forward Andrew Fifita.

The deal, believed to be worth $3.5 million, was called off following comments from Fifita last week that he regretted signing with the Bulldogs. In that interview he expressed that signing with rugby union was inevitable, and that he had achieved everything he wanted in league except a premiership and an Origin series victory.

“If I could go back now, I wish I chose rugby and then I wouldn’t be getting all the s*** I’ve been catching now,” Fifita told AAP last week.

“I grew up playing rugby so it was one of the best things.

“It’s always going to be there and I will eventually go to union.

“It’s another dream and I just want to chase another dream.”

Fifita was a schoolboy rugby player but signed with the Wests Tigers after being part of the Brumbies development squad. He then made the switch to Cronulla in 2011 where he has become the game’s premier front-rower.

Bulldogs Chief Executive Raelene Castle offered the following comment:

“After signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Andrew we’ve not been able to agree on the final terms of his NRL Playing Contract and have ceased negotiations with his management.

“We wish Andrew all the best for the future” Castle said

“Andrew is disappointed that we could not finalise terms with the Bulldogs but we still have several options in the pipeline to explore,” Fifitas Management Group I.am Athlete Management said.
