Red Bulls dominate V8 meet

Can anyone stop the Red Bulls of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup?

Certainly not if they continue to race like they did at the V8 Supercar meet at Symmons Plains.

Whincup and Lowndes shared the three race wins between them, qualified as the top two for each race and looked supremely comfortable all weekend.

Even an intra-team clash – which might have devastated morale at another team – has been laughed off by the Red Bull Racing teammates as they nestled into the top spots in the championship race.

And while Whincup enjoyed the more fruitful results of two wins and a second, the weekend belonged to Lowndes.

The popular driver was shunted off the track by his teammate Jamie Whincup in race one, copped a ban from the stewards to start at the back of the grid in race two then thrashed them all in race three.

Without friendly fire or intervention from officials, no one could stop Lowndes.

He powered past pole-sitter Whincup at the start, and cruised his “rocketship” – as rival James Courtney put it – through to a race win.

Put simply, the Red Bulls convalesced and conquered.

Lowndes is enjoying his best start to a V8 Supercars season in years – but could it be the start to reclaiming a championship last won in 1999?

“I’d like to hope so but it’s only round two of a long season,” Lowndes said.

“The champion at the end of the year is going to be the most consistent, have made the least amount of mistakes.”

Lowndes has a 70 point lead over Whincup, who surged from seventh to second in the drivers title, while the pair combined for a 238 point lead in the constructors race.

The Tasmanian results paint an ominous picture for the championship – with the pair not allowing the racing mishap to cloud their partnership.

After Whincup promised to payback Lowndes for the race one bump, the championship leader revealed he might be dialling in that favour sooner rather than later.

“Maybe tonight for a beer,” Lowndes said.
