Social media was ablaze with the revelation that Andrew Fifita’s lucrative four-year deal with the Canterbury Bulldogs was terminated after the comments he made last week, sparking widespread speculation that a move to rugby union was next on the cards.

Presently, it is unclear who terminated the deal. Both parties – the Bulldogs and his management – are now claiming it was a mutual decision.

What we do know is that the ink was barely dry when Fifita spoke of his regret in signing the $850,000 per year deal. We also know that Fifita made particular mention of the Sharks fans, from whom he had copped a lot of flak from – both in terms of his decision, and how he chose to handle it.

The question now is where will Fifita go?

Some Sharks fans believe the dynamic prop should remain with the club he openly claimed to love, albeit at a cheaper asking price – anywhere in the vicinity of $500-700,000. Many foresee his departure to rugby union, to play against other superstars Sonny Bill Williams and Sam Burgess.

If he signs a new deal at a new club for less money, his comments about providing for his family will be questioned, as will the comments he made regarding rugby union. If he stays at the Sharks, his loyalty and devotion will be scrutinised.

Fifita’s next move will define him.

Many do not realise that despite the success he commanded in the 2013 season, Andrew is only 24 years old and has barely any media coaching (though the latter fact is perhaps much more obvious). He is quickly learning that there are consequences for his actions, and that all egos must be balanced.

Players such as Paul Gallen, Jarryd Hayne and Cameron Smith do not get to where they are by being arrogant. Fifita should use this opportunity to develop his humility.

Perhaps as fans, both of the Sharks and the game in general, we too need to remember that Fifita has much to learn. The tide is turning at Remondis Stadium, though perhaps not for the better.

The distraction of wondering where-and-when Fifita may go is sure to add yet another unwanted distraction to an already floundering 2014 campaign.
