Cronulla say suspended coach Shane Flanagan is the man to lead them forward after he re-signed with the Sharks for three more NRL seasons on Wednesday.
But the worst may still be to come for the troubled Sharks this season while Flanagan is banned from dealing with the club.
Cronulla chief executive Steve Noyce heralded Flanagan recommitting to the club until the end of the 2017 season as a an important development.
Captain Paul Gallen admitted on Tuesday the winless Sharks are struggling without Flanagan’s influence this season after he was suspended over governance issues at the club in 2011.
His assistant Peter Sharp is filling in on an interim basis for the 2014 season.
Cronulla say Flanagan is working with the NRL to ensure he can recommence his role with the club in 2015.
But with the ASADA scandal still hovering over the club and former players Broderick Wright, Isaac Gordon and Josh Cordoba instigated legal proceedings against the club over the supplements program in 2011, the worst may still be to come.
Regardless Noyce backed Flanagan as the right man to guide the club over the next three NRL seasons.
“It is an important signing for the club as Shane will play a pivotal role in the development of the football operations and in the delivery of sustained and continued success at the Sharks, both on and off the field,” Noyce said in a statement.
“Last year Shane’s leadership, focus and work ethic played a significant role in the success the team achieved throughout what was a very difficult season.”
Noyce said Flanagan played a key role in bringing stars Luke Lewis and Todd Carney, Michael Gordon, Beau Ryan and Chris Heighington to the Sharks.
Gallen welcomed Flanagan’s retention.
“Flanno is respected by all the players and staff. He is the leader of our club,” Gallen said.
