Day will rebound from Masters showing

Australian Jason Day is banking on an improved outing at next week’s PGA Tour event after making a comeback at the US Masters from a seven-week injury layoff.

Day finished off his fourth Masters appearance in a solid but by no means spectacular tie for 20th at Augusta National.

It’s hard enough to return on limited practice at any stage, but to do so at the Masters, where the course was harder and faster than any time in the last decade and a half, was a tough ask.

“Obviously it’s frustrating for me to not be able to kind of have some more competitive rounds under my belt before Augusta,” Day said, referring to his time off from a thumb strain.

“But it is what it is. Some guys are hurt more than me and they can’t play right now.

“I’m just glad I got 72 holes in and I can play golf again.

“Something like this week was a good thing for me just to come out and play and get the competitive juices going again and really see what needs to improve.”

He will start his practice with putting after an unusually poor week on the greens.

The 26-year-old ranked 36th of the 51 cut makers in putting at Augusta.

He will head back into US PGA tour play next week at Hilton Head in South Carolina primed for a return to his best.

“It just seems like I just need a little bit more hard work on the putting, short game, and should be good to go,” said Day, who will drop to World No.5.

“I feel like I hit it well enough to contend this week and just didn’t capitalise on the greens.

“But I’m playing next week and it’s a good little course for me. I’m excited to get into it.”
