With the success of the first weekend of The Championships, despite poor weather and a lingering sadness at the loss Nathan Berry, we can reasonably assume that this Saturday will underscore just what this carnival will do for Sydney racing.

The re-packaging of autumn racing into a contemporary carnival of varied entertainment has been dynamic.

The build-up, through the Golden Slipper and into the current races at Randwick, plus the yearling sales and Royal Easter Show, have re-energised a sport which was clearly struggling to keep pace with changing consumer demand.

The efforts of Peter Vlandys and Darren Pearce should not be understated. They have been able to take a racing community along for a ride which will hopefully continue long after they’ve stepped aside. For this they require our admiration.

No doubt many behind the scenes also need to be congratulated – as with any large venture many hands are required to make this work.

All stakeholders have embraced The Championships and with some fine tuning and tweaking the event will continue to grow. The real stars obviously have played their part too, none more so than Lankan Rupee.

What a star! Horse of the year surely. His efforts to win the TJ Smith were stunning.

The QE Stakes stands as an old gem, brightly polished once again for all to admire and few to snare.

It will be a sensational race and I look forward to it. Already forensically studied by various form analysts, it will be a race that starts a nation .
