AFL set to add goal-line review cameras

The AFL plans to introduce goal-line cameras in the second half of the season after another round of score review bungles.

In Melbourne’s match with Gold Coast, James Frawley bagged an early goal with the help of a Suns defender’s fist.

At least three of the cameras used in the score review looked to show a conclusive punch but Frawley’s unlikely major stood.

And in Easter Monday’s tight clash between Geelong and Hawthorn, a Luke Bruest goal was ruled touched by the Cats’ Corey Enright that earned the ire of Hawks fans.

That decision seemed to be the right call, but made without any conclusive evidence.

On Monday, AFL football operations manager Mark Evans conceded to the AFL website that Frawley’s goal was a mistake.

“I’ve reviewed that this morning with our umpiring department… it should have been called touched,” he said.

Evans said the league hoped to introduce cameras in the second half of the season at its Melbourne stadia.

“We do think goal-line cameras will help us produce a better result and we’re still hopeful that we can get the MCG and Etihad on board for the second half of this season,” he said.

“The solution isn’t easy and we should absolutely be telling people that even when these cameras are in, there will be other things that the system doesn’t pick up.”

Evans claimed the current system was working well.

“Two-thirds of the reviews we do have been conclusive, so for the most part the system works very well,” he said.
