Sydney FC have relented to the pressure piled on the club all season and sacked coach Frank Farina.
Sky Blues Chairman Scott Barlow announced the decision after the club’s board met on Wednesday.
The Sky Blues were eliminated from the A-League finals with a 2-1 loss to Melbourne Victory last weekend, and have endured an up-and-down season under the former Socceroos and Brisbane Roar boss.
12 wins, three draws and 12 losses during the regular season saw Sydney FC scrape into the finals, but a first-round elimination forced the hand of the club’s board.
Farina had been at the helm since taking over from Ian Crook during the first half of last season.
He was Sydney FC’s seventh full time coach since the inaugural 2005-06 A-League season.
Farina also reportedly had a clause in his contract which meant he could be sacked if the Sky Blues failed to make the top four this season.
“Frank joined us as coach in a difficult period last season and has always given his absolute dedication and commitment to the club,” Barlow said.
“Frank has shown great integrity and resolve in what has been often challenging circumstances this year.
“I would like to pay tribute to Frank for his professionalism and wish him well for the future.”
The decision made Ryan O’Connell ponder a tilt at the job, before he considered the drawbacks:
If you want job security, my advice would be to stay away from the Sydney FC head coaching gig.
