It’s that time of year where the footy season is in full swing, which means everything is perfect in the world. We’re starting to get an indication of what type of season we’re in.

Players are starting to emerge as stand-outs and their names are being thrown around for Origin … NSW of course, Queensland never have such speculation. Somehow the most talked about positions are always the halves pairing and the fullback.

Our playmakers. Our spine. No wonder NSW can’t win a series, we never have sure starters in our most important positions.

As usual there’s plenty of talk around what position Jarryd Hayne should play. Should he play fullback, on the wing, in the centres or even five eighth? What do I think? I think without a doubt he should be playing fullback.

Hayne is the best fullback NSW have. Just because he played outstanding in the centres for Australia doesn’t mean we should put him in the centres for Origin. He would excel in any position you put him in on a footy field. It doesn’t mean he should be playing those positions though. NSW should be fielding the best players for each position and Hayne’s best position is fullback.

Being in the centres limits Hayne’s role in attack. While he can still play a roving centre role and pop up anywhere, he is limited in where he can pop up close to the try line. That’s the area where he is most dangerous. It takes him out of the sweeping play and it also takes out that deadly cut out pass.

While it would be a mouth watering match-up to have Hayne against Justin Hodges, and even better against Greg Inglis, I really think that he would be under-utilised in the centres. Not to mention the centre role is a specialised position in defence, it’s very easy to get caught out in that position. Hayen would be up to the task but NSW really should be putting a specialist centre there for Origin. Someone that plays that position every week.

I must admit that I am a Parramatta supporter, but I do think Hayne is the in-form fullback of the season so far. We all know he is outstanding in attack but his positional play has improved immensely and his goal-line defence has been superb this year.

Whatever Laurie Daley decides we know Hayne will have blinder like he always does. It’s just a matter of making sure he sees enough ball to make an impact on the game because we all know he is a game changer.
