The Lions will be in for a long night against their Waikato hosts the Chiefs, who have scored more than four tries a game for an average of almost 30 points. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:35pm AEST.

The Chiefs have won their past four matches against the Lions, averaging 44 points per game in the process.

The teams also set the record for the highest scoring game in Super Rugby history during this streak, with an 18 tries scored in the Chiefs’ 72-65 victory.

The Chiefs have lost their form in recent weeks, though. In Round 10 they came within one point of winning against the Crusaders, but lost when a penalty goal attempt by Gareth Anscombe went wide in the 80th minute.

Then in Round 11, the Brumbies capitalised on penalties and successful lineouts to defeat the Chiefs 41-23.

The Lions on the other hand haven’t made any attempt to improve their performance this season. The South African team will take heart from the fact that their scrum success rate of 91 per cent is the best in the competition this year, while the Chiefs have the worst lineout success rate at 76 per cent.

Coming off a Bye, the Lions have two injured – Rudi Mathee and Franco Van der Merwe, who is out for the season – while the Chiefs have 11 recovering.

The Lions’ Elton Jantjie will be making his second start this season after overcoming a shoulder injury.

Chiefs player Michael Fitzgerald should also be making a return tonight after being suspended from all forms of the game for a dangerous tackle in Round 10.

At home, the Chiefs will play a strong game and be too good for the Lions.
