Breaking: Sydney trainer Chris Waller has announced on Wednesday morning that Zoustar will be retired, withdrawn from Royal Ascot with suspensory ligament injury, and retired.

Zoustar has been stabled in England while preparing for an assault on Ascot. However, the injury has meant that the colt will need three months off from racing – ending his young career.

The three-year-old sprinter has been withdrawn from one of the world’s most prestigious sprint races after a leg injury was detected after his first session on the track.

“A minor problem was detected with the horse following his first serious pace work and scans overnight revealed he has a very small strain to a lateral aspect of the proximal suspensory ligament.

“His workload needs to be reduced as well as being given time off for the area to rest and recover.

“It is extremely disappointing that we are not able to compete at Ascot and the owners and I are devastated by this. The horse had travelled extremely well to England and for me personally it was the start of what would have been the experience of a lifetime.”

Zoustar emerged as a star during the 2013/14 season, with dominant Group 1 wins in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Golden Rose Stakes. His final start in the Canterbury Stakes he finished eighth, and pulled up mildly lame.

Zoustar has been purchased by Widden Stud – with Antony Thompson from the Denman based stud confirming Zoustar has been retired this morning following a tendon injury, with 130 mares on his book. He is standing for $40,000 plus GST.
