The Schofields have had a terrible run of luck of late. The news that young hoop Chad Schofield would be out for three months didn’t help that record much.

Doctor’s confirmed that Schofield had a fracture in his neck after a nasty three-horse pile-up at Cranbourne on Sunday.

Schofield spent a few nights in Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, where specialists were able to identify a crack in his C3 vertebrae.

It’s a major blow for the young jockey who secured his fourth Group 1 victory during the Queensland Derby, and he had already spoken of his excitement to be combining with Go Indy Go and Bring Me The Maid in the Spring.

Chad’s father Glyn Schofield is also out indefinitely following facial fractures during Warwick Farm trials on the 19th of May.

The good news for Chad is that the injury won’t require surgery for him to make a full recovery. It’s also believed that the injury could’ve been an aggravation of a previous one, meaning recovery time could be shorter.

The other two riders in the crash Steven Arnold and Ben Thompson were treated for concussion, and both have been discharged.

Despite the injury Schofield remained positive, tweeting to fans:

“Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and well wishes. I’m okay, I arrived home last night, I’m taking it easy, and looking forward to being back in the saddle.”

The injury adds to an already tough few months for the Schofield’s who farewelled son-in-law Nathan Berry last month. The promising young jockey married Whitney Schofield in February, before passing away in April.
