MATCH RESULT

Spain destroyed today. Holland went behind courtesy of a poor penalty decision but they didn’t drop their heads and instead played superb football and scored five unanswered goals to romp home to a fantastic win.

Robben and Van Persie certified themselves as world class footballers with superb performances today. Could not have asked for much more from them.

The Dutch are back in a big way after a poor Euro campaign two years ago, while Spain once again have to regroup big time. Big challenge ahead for the reigning World Cup champions.

FINAL SCORE:
Spain: 1
Netherlands: 5

Vicente Del Bosque has a great squad at his disposal, although there are question marks over the fitness of key striker Diego Costa.

Costa has arguably been Spain’s most in-form striker, has been plagued by injury of late. As a result, he was forced off early in Atletico Madrid’s title deciding matches against FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

With this in mind, it wouldn’t surprise to see Costa start on the bench today with Fernando Torres taking his place upfront.

Despite the concerns for Costa, Spain possess a wonderful squad blessed with skill and creativity upfront and steel in defence.

Sergio Ramos has certified himself as arguably the best central defender on the planet after his recent heroics against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League this season.

Midfield maestros Xavi, David Silva and Andres Iniesta will also prove tough to handle for a young Dutch defence.

With Spain expected to dominate possession, the Netherlands should be expected to play on the counter tonight. They certainly have enough firepower in their squad to hurt the Spanish on the break.

Arjen Robben, Robin Van Persie and Wesley Sneijder form a dangerous Dutch triumvirate that will keep Spain on its toes today.

Van Persie is also struggling with a groin injury and could very well miss out on today’s clash.

With both sides blessed with strong offensive options, we should expect to see a far more open affair than the dire game they played out in the 2010 final.

Spain do possess the better depth across the board, and their recent success in continental competitions will give them the confidence to secure a good win today.
